Some folks are very vocal about the value of STEM workers, and our need as a country to convince more children to pursue work in technical fields.
Fact is, we have a lot of Americans who have skills in these areas. And we screw those people over and over and over.
If it cost an arm and a leg to hire a foreigner, we’d see less of this. I’d like to see a $50,000 annual tax paid by the company for every H-1b they hire.
Yes, they keep pushing STEM education, yet the percentage of STEM majors working in STEM is not high. Companies would rather hire foreigners at a lower wage.
Actually, it should be around a $500,000 tax per year per H1-B worker imported. That way they could subsidize each American engineer working a Macdonalds or Dennys with a $100,000 “H1-B Temporary Worker” subsidy.
“Id like to see a $50,000 annual tax paid by the company for every H-1b they hire.”
They’d pay that in a heartbeat. That’s only an additional $12.5K/year.
What they need to do is eliminate the 4 year slave rule. Companies won’t be as quick to hire a bunch of H1Bs knowing that they could jump ship at any time. They might have to *gasp* pay for talent.
There are companies looking to hire foreign candidates with some legitimately rare skills and are willing to pay them what they’re worth on the open market ... seems like those in charge of H1Bs only want people from India willing to work for 60% of market value for 4 years though.
I wish I could see a list of the scummy politicians that are benefiting from this slave trade financially. I’m sure virtually all of them think engineering is a simple job that nobody wants.
