I'd go further and say that this wasn't an innocent mistake based on disinformation, but a calculated diversion. After 9/11, the American people rightly demanded that the administration do something in retaliation. The Saudis were in bed with the Bushes as much as they were with the Clintons, so investigating the money trail from Al Quaeda to the Saudi clerics to Saudi Royals was out. Iraq was a good red herring diversion that created the impression of something being done while the Saudis could go on financing their radical clerics without so much as a slap on the wrist.

Sounds about right. Obama bows to the Saudis, Bush kisses them and holds their hand. That's about the only difference.

The Iraq Survey Group commissioned by Bush couldn’t find any WMDs other than artillery shells left over from the Iran-Iraq war. And those weren’t the causus belli given for Gulf War II despite the excuse mongering of W’s apologists.

Whatever we may think of them, if anything, the Saudi gov is not stupid. They had nothing to gain, only lose by supporting or condoning a terrorist attack on the US.
Just because Bin Laden was born there, doesn’t mean the Saudi government had anything to do with the attack on the US on 9-11.
As I recall from previous articles some time ago — Bin Laden and his terrorists wanted to kill the political leaders of Saudi Arabia also.
