A new op-ed published by the Global Times, the mouthpiece of the ruling Chinese Communist Party, claims that Russia “humiliated” an “arrogant” United States when its warplanes buzzed a U.S. Navy ship in the Baltic Sea earlier this week.
ON BOARD THE U.S.S. JOHN C. STENNIS, in the South China Sea — As it tries to persuade Beijing to abandon its military buildup in the South China Sea, the Obama administration has been reluctant to describe its approach as a revival of “containment,” the Cold War strategy aimed at preventing the spread of Communism. It insists that its policies in Asia are neither targeted at China nor focused on military measures, as containment was against the Soviet Union.
But on a six-day visit to India and the Philippines this week, Defense Secretary Ashton B. Carter left little doubt that China is one of the Pentagon’s primary concerns in the region — and that the United States intends both to strengthen alliances and move more hardware and troops here to counter China’s growing military reach.
