Tax Illinois drivers by the mile?
The Daily Herald (Suburban Chicago) ^ | 4-12-2016 | Mike Riopell

A new proposal to pay for fixing Illinois' roads could use devices to track how far Illinois drivers have traveled and tax them by the mile.

The plan from Senate President John Cullerton, a Chicago Democrat, is aimed at gasoline tax revenues that have fallen as drivers have bought more fuel-efficient cars.

Cullerton says cars that get better mileage still create the same wear on roads, so the state needs to find a better way to collect taxes and pay for those repairs.

"If all the cars were electric, there would be no money for the roads," Cullerton said.

Drivers, under the plan, could pick whether a device in their cars monitors their miles one of two different ways. Or they could choose to pay the 1.5-cent-per-mile tax on a base 30,000 miles traveled per year, if they have privacy concerns.

One device would track where specifically drivers go and not charge them when they travel out of state or on Illinois toll roads. The other would simply monitor the odometer reading, not tracking the rest of the information.

Then Prius owners must be forced to pay their fair share

Somebody needs to ask this Democrat what they’ve been doing with all the gas taxes they were already collecting.

So.. IL drivers whose commutes or frequent business take them out of state will be charged for out-of-state driving, while those living just across the border in WI commuting to Chicagoland won’t incur the tax.

Sure.. That’ll work out.

I detest Cullerton and Madigan. Those toxic little leprechauns have destroyed Illinois. Words cannot express the contempt in which I hold those two criminals.

Good plan! That way they can track the last few remaining tax paying citizen's mileage as they leave the Peoples State of Illinois to take up residency in less insane places.

Aren’t Chicago people some of the biggest lovers of taxation who ever lived? Bernard Epton said it was “too late” for them in 1983.

Wonder how Everett McKinley Dirksen would reply to that: “Well, of our people want more taxes, who am I to tell them ‘no’”?

“The consumer will be paying the tax as higher priced goods after the trucking firms raise rates to cover the tax.”

That is still a voluntary event over which the consumer still has control, whereas letting trucks ruin our roadways, forcing all taxpayer to cough up is involuntary.

Since almost everything is delivered by truck ones control over paying the tax through increased prices could only mitigated by becoming a self-sustained hermit in the woods.

Doesn’t sound like a fair tax to me. People in the suburbs and in the rural areas will pay the most.

This pantload doesn’t understand physics! Cars that get better gas milage do so because they are LIGHTER!

Well let's see where Electrics come in: Volt = 3794#

Leaf = 3354#

Tesla = 4647

My 2000 Buick Regal 3500#

Hell the Tesla weighs almost as much as the full sized Chevy Silverado I used to own. I would say that electrics put just as much wear on the roads as older gas vehicles do. Now new small to mid size cars do weigh about 500 to 700 pounds less than 16 year old mid size cars, not really that much lighter in the bigger scheme of things.

The roots run deep. Getting rid of those two would be a good start to changing things but it will be a long time before Illinois turns around.

Just have the odometer read once a year when you have the emissions testing done.

**********************************************************

No annual “emissions testing” in Illinois and quit giving them ideas.

Yeah, the batteries are very heavy! My son has a Leaf that he uses as a commute car. He has a solar panel setup and he says he’s saving a ton of money as opposed to the VW GTI he used to drive. Teslas are built about 15 miles from here, and there’s actually a Tesla dealer nearby. You cannot drive through our town without seeing several of them. They are truly beautifully made vehicles and they are FAST! For a luxury commute vehicle they are well suited since they now can go something like 300 miles between charges. There’s a video out from Australia where they run the new 4WD Tesla against a V8 SuperCar and the Tesla wins.
All that said though, even EVs have lots lower wheel loading than do trucks. Largest over-the-road trucks can gross 80,000 lb. If trucks were not a problem, the states would not be weighing them at roadside scales.

No argument about trucks, but very few run on anything but diesel, so pay highway taxes through fuel purchases, my reply was regarding the comment that cars now are lighter so cause less damage to roads and also addressing that argument as it regards electric vehicles paying no road taxes at all while still causing as much wear as gas powered vehicles.

I'm in SoCAl and there are a lot of Teslas down here.

That IS a problem! State governments are all enamoured with EV’s so they are essentially giving their owners a tax break. But the fact of the matter is, that so long as we generate electricity with fossil fuels, EV’s are not an efficient means of transportation! Now, if we haddn’t backed away from nuclear power, EV’s would make a lot of sense.
