Newt Gingrich joined "On the Record" to talk about the state of the 2016 race ahead of next week's New York primary and other Northeastern contests.
The former House Speaker said he believes Donald Trump can make it to 1,237 delegates -- the necessary number in order to secure the Republican nomination -- ahead of the national convention in Cleveland.
"Trump is a guy who moves in surges," he said. "You just watch him. He focuses very intently and then he puts enormous resources and again, this is a guy who is worth somewhere between 4 and 10 billion dollars. So, his ability to focus is unlike anybody I have ever seen in politics."
He said that if Trump can repeat an anticipated strong performance in New York in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Rhode Island and New Jersey, then he will look like he is "very dominant."
"So I think the odds are better than even money that they can find the delegates before they get to Cleveland."
Gingrich also weighed in on the controversy over the official Twitter account of the Colorado Republican Committee tweeting out against Trump after Cruz swept all of the state's delegates.

I hope he makes it to 1237 before the convention just to avoid the whining about others “stealing” the nomination.
So now Newt is back on Trump side when it looks like maybe he will win.
That Newt, like the mighty oak.
Says the guy who says Trump is like Reagan? LOL. Cool story bro.
Isn’t he Trumps senior advisor or some such? I coulda swore I herd something like that....maybe I was dreamin’.
If Cruz gets blown out in NY, PA, CT, DE, RI and MD, he’ll be finished. His numbers will fall into Kasich territory for May and June.
herd = heard

I agree. I still see Trump with 1,300 ish delegates going into the convention. While some of the state numbers have turned out different than my original analysis. He is still on track to the 1,300
Good interview.

Talking as a shepherd again?
Newt is right on.
Trump for president.
You forgot Jersey.
I checked the official gop site; https://www.gop.com/official-2016-gop-delegate-count/
Trump has 755 and needs 482
Cruz has 521 and needs 716
There are 798 remaining
Trump needs 60.4% of the remaining delegates.
Cruz needs 89.7% of the remaining delegates.

Hey I corrected it. lol But since you mentioned it, the wife and I went through growth group at our church last year in order to become members, part of which was taking an eval test on what kind of person you are in regards to how to best serve the church and congregation......out of 5 categories shepherd was #2 for me. :) No one was more surprised than my wife. Right in class she said “I always thought you were more of a lone wolf!” lol I now am part of our church parking ministry. Figures, right?
Hope Newt’s assessment is correct.
I don’t think he ever left. He is probably trying to look somewhat neutral, but I think he favors Trump more than the other two.
Bless you!
