About half a dozen times in the past few weeks I have been taken aside by a 20-something who’s looking for reassurance that the republic will not end. There has never been any campaign like this in the history of the nation, they say, and they know this is true because they’ve read it everywhere.
“We have officially hit a new low in political discourse,” declared Stephen Colbert (after Trump’s penis allusion on national television). Next, the Huffington Post warned, “Recent violence at Trump rallies marks a new low for American politics.” Not long after that, the Financial Times said: “Trump v Cruz hits new low as wives dragged into fray.”
A new low. A new low? Heavens no, I say, in my best wizened voice. Not even close. Rather than ending the republic, these folks would fit right in with the men who founded it. What’s distressing is not that this adolescent baiting and sniping is unheard of, but that it isn’t. We should have outgrown this by now.

Name calling: Donald Trump, in particular, is so fond of calling people names that a running list of epithets being kept by the New York Times now includes more than 200 of his targets. Not a one of his zingers comes close to what leaders and would-be leaders spat at each other throughout history though, and not just because Trump uses far fewer syllables.

“The Founding Fathers” is a... troublesome? term. They were ALL great, all (6) of them (I believe it is 6) possessed of truly extraordinary qualities, but... they differed on a LOT of things and issues. This constant equating of them is nonsense. Their differences became STARKLY exposed very soon after the ratification of the Cons.
Also, JQA is NOT an FF. Andrew Jackson is an FF, so I’m not sure what the point is.
Which is fine, I deferred for 4 years and had a low number, luck of the draw.
But honestly, Donald as an equal to the founders in intellect and courage, give me a break.
Different times, maybe he didn't have the opportunity. And was too busy to engage in governance till his fortune was secure.
Not worth making a big issue, but the 7 “founding fathers” frequently referenced based on a 1970s historian are John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and George Washington. Lots of founding fathers, those who fought, and those who lost children. I’d have included Sam Adams amongst those, heck, a military/political incompetent but Paul Revere gets credit for the famous poem. Andrew Jackson, 9 at the founding, give him credit for being the first populist Democrat.

As I said, all Republicans will coalesce around Cruz after the delegates are taken care of in the convention.
Trump-Only “Republicans” are just RINOs that have switched from Democrats to vote for Trump, so they either will fall in line and vote for the true Conservative Republican, or they will crawl back to where they came from.
