He called for divorced and remarried Catholics to participate more fully in church life. But he closed the door on gay marriage. He quotes Jorge Luis Borges and Jesus Christ. There is an entire chapter on love.
But more than anything, Pope Franciss long-awaited document on family life, released Friday by the Vatican, amounts to an exultation of traditional marriage while recognizing that life, in his own words, isnt always perfect. Yet rather than judging, he commanded, the church should be a pillar of support.

“...says no to gay marriage.”
Yeah.....this week. Give him time.
Not suprising for a heretic pope. Borges was divorced and remarried and described himself as an agnostic.
“Yeah.....this week. Give him time.”
Exactly. “Who am I to judge?”
Pope don’t judge.
lamestream media. Wait and get the real words from a Vatican source.
He has not and can not change Church teaching!
The Church does not, can not and will not recognize Sodomy as a legitimate or moral expression of human sexuality. It will not allow divorced and civilly remarried Catholics to receive the Eucharist. They must obtain an annulment in the Church.
He has now waived many of the fees so more people can attempt to obtain an annulment, yet they are not handed out quite so easily as civil divorces. The Church requires that proof of deception or defect in the union is discovered prior to granting one. The fact that I don't want to be married to this person because I have found a better deal, or I am unhappy is not a reason for an annulment.
Marriage is hard work and it is not intended to be something that is created for the benefit of the participants. It is set up for the protection of children and society. Children are a natural consequence of the heterosexual sex act. No amount of sodomy or technique will allow two men or two women to create a natural birth. It protects children by requiring that men who impregnate women are required by society to care for the children they create and it protects society by making men care for the children they create and not having them rely on the forced support of strangers through their tax dollars.
Will you continue to defend the heretic?
That 250 page document does not do anything about divorced and remarried that the Church has not always allowed.
Swear this is just a way for a canny Jesuit to re-teach a world gone forgetful with tickles of change for the ears of the ignorant, then the wisdom of the Church as it always has held.
As Fr. Z said: Tens of people are going to read this thing.
A pile of sludge. As always.
And they may be right.
Did you read the document or just WaPo and NYT?
In case you haven’t, I recommend you do, as it doesn’t reflect what you appear to believe.
I read it. All of it.
In my opinion, the key themes are to reinforce the value and need for marriage.
It also speaks to those who minister to those in irregular marriages, divorced, and divorced/remarried.
In cases outside of the norm, he reaffirms the need to teach the truth, as well as encourage those to come closer to God through discernment, examination of conscience, etc.
The goal is to recognize people don’t fit neatly into niches, but rather, many people have problems that are very difficult to solve.
It is the Church’s role to reach all people, especially the lost sheep, and through love, mercy, and gentle teaching, return them to the fold.
Jesus told the Samaritan woman of her 5 marriages, not humiliate her, or turn her away, but to be open to her and encourage her to right living.
The same goes to the woman caught in adultery. He didn’t come to condemn her, rather, he told her to go and sin no more.
In both cases, the women were away from God by their actions. However, He drew close to them, and with mercy, and proper instruction, put them on the right path.
I try to ignore this pope as often as possible as I am hopeful the significant damage he does is blunted by a short papacy and a realignment back to an orthodoxy in the next go round. This guy is almost as bad as John XXIII.
I have advocated that this pope take a vow of silence and lead a quiet prayerful life. Unfortunately he refuses to do so.
