Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz often tells supporters about his Supreme Court win against the federal government in 2008, defending Texas' right to execute a Mexican man for murder, as evidence of his conservative and anti-establishment credentials.

But there is one part of the story that goes untold. The Medellin v. Texas case, decided when Cruz was the state's solicitor general, set the stage for years of diplomatic tension between the United States and its southern neighbor.

Looking through the 6 losses, I would have (likely) ruled against Texas in Medicaid Funding, Sentencing Error 1, Sentencing Error 2, and Death Penalty for the mentally ill. In death penalty for child rapists, as much as I would want to rule in favor of Texas, I would probably rule against Texas. On redistricting, I do not have enough information to form a conclusion.

I am disinclined to hold the losses against Cruz as they were in my opinion cases that Texas was wrong in. One could reasonably hold it against Cruz that he appealed the cases to the Supreme Court. I don't know if the Texas SG can admit an error in a case or not appeal. I am disinclined to hold against Cruz that he tried to claim more of them as victories as that is typical behavior.

I don’t really have an opinion. I researched the court cases and the findings are listed by the SC as for the plaintiff or for the defendant so its pretty straight forward.

Global-Tech Appliances, Inc. v. SEB S.A. won Cruz

5–4 decision for Patrick Kennedy

6–3 decision for Texas (Medellin 2nd appearance)

6–3 decision for Doug Dretke

6–3 decision for Texas

5–4 decision for Scott Louis Panetti

5–4 decision for LaRoyce Lathair Smith

5–4 decision for Rick Perry, Governor of Texas, et al.
Medellín v. Dretke
Decision Per Curiam opinion In a 5-4 per curiam opinion, the Court held that Medellin had not exhausted his state court appeals and sent the case back to Texas state court.

6–3 decision for Doug Dretke

Alcocer praised Cruz as intelligent and pragmatic but said the senator was too inflexible on issues like immigration and the death penalty. “Cruz takes certain positions that are very clearly defined. And he's much more conservative, much more dogmatic than Trump,"

And that just about seals the deal for me.
