Broadway composer denies NC companies right to produce shows
Tony Award-winning composer asks other Broadway artists to act as well
Schwartzs work includes Pippin, Godspell, Wicked, The Magic Show
Schwartz: Action against apartheid eventually proved to be very effective
=====
The reaction against North Carolinas law rolling back LGBT protections continues to spread beyond the business world, where corporations have called for its repeal. Now Broadways musical world is flexing its muscle.
This email by Tony Award-winning composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz began circulating Friday, according to the online theater publication BroadwayWorld.com:
To my fellow theatre writers and producers: As you no doubt know, the state of North Carolina has recently passed a reprehensible and discriminatory law. I feel that it is very important that any state that passes such a law suffer economic and cultural consequences, partly because it is deserved and partly to discourage other states from following suit.
Therefore, I and my collaborators are acting to deny the right to any theatre or organization based in North Carolina to produce any of our shows. We have informed our licensing organizations and touring producers of this, and I'm happy to say have met with compliance and approval from them.

Schwartz is hurting nobody except mostly small-town theatre guilds, mostly run by volunteers.
Can you fix the title? Should be “No Wicked for NC: Composer Stephen Schwartz bans NC shows over HB2”
Wonderful news. It was a dog show anyhow.
“Wicked” was presented in Charlotte in January. The cheap seats, behind the concrete pillars, were over $75. We decided to skip it.
Imagine if Exxon/Mobil decided not to sell gasoline in New York because they don’t like the global warming posturing of Governor Cuomo and Mayor DeBlasio.
Good idea.
I have friends who have practically begged me to pull up stakes and relocate to NC. If they hold the line on this liberal fascism I may very well do so.
A life without Broadway musicals.
What shall I do instead?
Almost anything...
Let’s see who breaks first.
Me or the gay men of America?
Sheesh!,,,,, Homos,,,,,,,!
Most gay men have no interest in using the women’s restroom. I honestly don’t know what these people are thinking.
I honestly dont know what these people are thinking either. And for many, many other reasons as well.
Well, the plus side is that schools and local companies will have to make some effort in looking through the vast array of other choices for musical theater. Audiences might get to see something unexpected.
I think the composers should get the same treatment as those Christians who were sued and are being forced to pay exorbitant fines over not baking a cake or taking photos of gay weddings.
Those people should be countersued.
If businessman Stephen Schwartz can choose who he does and does not do business with, then surely other business people can likewise choose who they do and do not do business with.
This is funny because that show just toured NC, and ended in the last month or two. Everyone in NC that wanted to see the show HAS ALREADY SEEN IT! It was in both Charlotte and Raleigh from what my wife said. So they weren’t going to come back for years anyway!
I would guess that Christians who patronize Broadway shows represent considerably more money that the money that North Carolina will lose as a result of this blackmail.
Those who are tired of the LGBT heavy handed intimidation should avoid travel to NYC, and avoid doing business with companies headquartered there. If that is done, they will feel it in their pockets.
Broadway is overrated.
@#@#$ this f....t!!
who the @#$@# do these people think they are?
so we give up watching some productions of shows.
GIVE THINGS UP!! and hit him and Netflix and the NFL HARD with emails.
how about a protest rally.
can we get off the couch for that!!!????
