Hundreds of thousands could lose food stamps as states restore limits

About 45 million people receive benefits in the food stamp program, now known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a liberal-leaning research and advocacy group, estimates that 500,000 to 1 million people will lose benefits this year.

The federal Food and Nutrition Service said many adults would need to take steps to meet work requirements or risk losing aid.

Ellen M. Vollinger, legal director of the Food Research and Action Center, an advocacy group, noted that the poet T.S. Eliot had described April as "the cruelest month," and for people losing SNAP benefits, she said, that description is appropriate.

"Many thousands of jobless adults without dependents will lose all their SNAP benefits even though they are seeking work," she said.

Our overlords will never permit this to take effect before the November election.

They should issue food stamps monthly and base it on a person’s weight.

“The federal Food and Nutrition Service said many adults would need to take steps to meet work requirements or risk losing aid.”.......

The county I live has a very large population of people on food stamps and welfare recipients because of state and federal mandates. There are not a lot of jobs available to satisfy the need of those with work let alone those who are unemployed. When this new law is put into place, I see an exodus of those without work moving to Minnesota or back to Chicago. Might even be a good thing for both them and those of us who remain.

A good start that should be built upon for another decade or so.

What chance would any Dem have in November if ObamaCare penalties and food stamp cuts are felt by American voters before the election?

You're missing an important point.

Those jobs may require a drug test and at the local Walmart where a friend of mine is the manager, only 1 out of 4 applicants pass the drug test.

The proper solution for food stamps, IMHo, is to require a drug test to receive the foodstamps. That would reduce the rolls a lot more than a work requirement.

Better yet, base it on Michelle Obama's school lunch recommendation...

The county I live has a very large population of people on food stamps and welfare recipients too.
But they never make the exodus to Mexico and other south American countries it’s a dream come true for the free housing food and many other perks and they get to vote yes it’s Los Angeles county.

We have barely any job postings in my area, and they are McJobs that require availability 24/7 (though you’ll only work part-time hours each week). Of course, if we turned off the immigration spigot we’d have more jobs available, but neither party will do that.

We aren’t allowed to say so aloud anymore, but the idea that someone receiving public assistance of any kind has money for illegal drugs is ridiculous; that alone (not job eligibility) should drive the drug testing requirement.
