Almost every sport I’ve played has “the rules” and “the spirit of the rules”. Some people violate the spirit but stay within the rulebook. They are considered a**holes but everyone else and people don’t want anything to do with them (but you can’t avoid it in leagues).

Great point. It also makes turnabout fair play. The party abandons us, we abandon the party.
