China is set to install "a few thousand" troops and staff at its first ever overseas military base, the first permanent overseas deployment by Chinese armed forces.

The new naval facility will sit in the same city as America's own sprawling African military headquarters in Djibouti, the Horn of Africa country where the US has a 4,500-strong base running counter-terrorism operations across the region. Japan, which also has its only overseas military base in Djibouti, already faces a tense stand-off with China over territorial disputes in the South China Sea.

I guess building bases off the coast of the Philippines doesn’t count?

So European colonialism was bad, but China’s OK to do it.

This is all about oil. China is more dependent on middle eastern oil than we are.

I know, right. And European colonialism was all about getting Africa into the 20th Century. Personally, aside from South Africa, I’d wish Europe would have stayed the Hell away from Africa and let them stew in their own feces.

China has at least a million citizens working in Africa; so
expect them to have military forces, carriers, cargo aircraft, etc. in the vicinity.

Plus, they need to protect the shipping lanes to keep the raw materials they need coming.

They are the Britain of the 21st century, so expect them to expand as necessary...

As the next rising superpower, they will be expanding their military and political influence. This includes colonies, spheres of influence, bases abroad- an imperial power in every sense.

‘They are the Britain of the 21st century, so expect them to expand as necessary..’

More likely the 21st century reincarnation of Tojo's Japan. With a similar parabola. There will be many dead Americans at the end but unless we have zero survival instinct the finale will be tens of millions of dead Chinese and their fleet on the bottom of the Pacific and Indian Oceans and their cities and military bases ashes and ruins.
