West Antarctic ice sheet could collapse, causing significant sea level rise, experts warn

Scientists are warning that the West Antarctic ice sheet could collapse, potentially causing sea levels to rise more than 49 feet by 2500.

The study published in the journal Nature this week, cites the impact of greenhouse gas emissions over the coming decades. Collapsing Antarctic ice could cause sea levels to rise more than 3 feet by 2100, say co-authors Rob DeConto, a geoscientist at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and David Pollard, a palaeoclimatologist at Pennsylvania State University in University Park.

If emissions continue unabated, the scientists warn, atmospheric warming will soon become a “dominant driver” of ice loss, with prolonged ocean warming delaying its recovery for thousands of years.

If 90 percent of a ice floe is above water now and the remaining frozen part occupies more space in frozen rather than in liquid form what accounts for the additional displacement?

Not only that, but there is more air in the ice than water ...

Well. . . .think of the upside. 49 feet of water would flood out DC, New York, Boston, Los Angeles, Seattle.

The trick will be to have it hit all at once, drowning the rats. . . . (evil grin)

49 feet? Over the whole jillion square miles of the seas’ surfaces? Pity the person who believes this stuff.

Really. Sounds like someone learned the "new maths" in school where you can "feel" the answers that you want.

You will be imprisoned if you don’t give your virgin daughter up to be tossed into the vulcano.

Same old huckster’s gambit.

Probably even the liberals who live along the coastlines will know to step back from the water as it rushes in over the next 500 years.

Has any prediction these global warming cultists made ever come to pass? By now, snow on the East Coast was supposed to be a thing of the past?

From Skeptical Science: "Professor Niklas Mörner, who has been studying sea level for a third of a century, says it is physically impossible for sea level to rise at much above its present rate, and he expects 4-8 inches of sea level rise this century, if anything rather below the rate of increase in the last century. In the 11,400 years since the end of the last Ice Age, sea level has risen at an average of 4 feet/century, though it is now rising much more slowly because very nearly all of the land-based ice that is at low enough latitudes and altitudes to melt has long since gone."

2500? Isn’t it the left that justifies keynsian economics by claiming that “in the long run we’re all dead anyway”

However, DeConto told Nature that his model projects little or no sea-level rise from melting Antarctic ice if emissions are cut quickly enough to limit the average global temperature to 3.6 degrees (2 degrees Celsius).

If the average global temperature is 3.6 degrees, I don't think melting ice will be the problem.
