Some speculated that Jeb's campaign strategy was to use that rule to effectively shut out any real competition. There were so many "favorite sons" running that no one but Jeb would get enough states.

The rule doesn't have to be abolished. The 8 state rule was adopted for the 2012 convention, it would have to be adopted again for the 2016 one. The rules do not carry forward from one convention to the next.

It was a mistake to adopt it in 2012, there's no reason to repeat that mistake now.
