Could not break a 50 at a bank while traveling in US this week?

Went to a bank to break a 50 I had brought along for tolls, and was told that I could not do that unless I had an account.

An American bank was not accepting American money! What the hell is going on?

A Fifty is worth a little less than a twenty was worth in the 80's. Not much.

Went to a pet store to purchase pet food, had to register to use a fifty.

More of a move to get rid of money?

Anyone else?

When I went to pay off my mortgage a couple of years ago, the credit union demanded ID to move money from the savings account to the checking account, but the bank with the mortgage DIDN'T need ID to accept the check for the payoff. I don't care how you look at it, that's just backward!

Well, where do THEY bank???

Remittances to Mexico or where ever, acquired at the check-cashing store....it ain't rocket surgery.

Sorry for the snark in my #82

It was not called for.

“Let me get his straight. I have a $50.00 check written to me by my stepfather who is your customer. I have more than enough ID. Yet you refuse to cash this check? You expect my bank, which has nothing to do with this transaction, to honor a check written by your customer? So what you are saying is as far as you are concerned you have no obligation at the counter to honor any check written by your customers to someone not a customer? “

Exactly. The first thought that would go through my mind in such a situation is that the bank is committing fraud. They have an obligation to the customer who wrote the check to honor the check if there are funds available in the account drawn upon to do so. I'd make as much noise as possible in such a situation. I would absolutely not pay any fee either.

Pay ‘em in rolled coinage. Tell ‘em that’s YOUR ‘convenience fee’

Was going to get the oil in my car changed last week at a place I have been using for years. They now have a sign that says no cash, credit/debit cards only. Manager said it was just one less hassle for them if they could eliminate someone having to go to the bank. Second sign I have noticed in our area lately. Times are changing.

Wonder how these merchants will like it when they start seeing credit card charges by the issuer climb to 10 percent or higher. Our doctor clients have already noticed there fees for accepting credit cards creep upwards.

Counterfeiting is the main reason, bank wants you to have an account so if it turns out it is fake later they have recourse... Retailers are the same way...

Too many superbills are out there, most protect themselves by taking nothing larger than a $20.

Luckily, the same thing happened to my aunt and it ruined her credit. It prevents her from borrowing money, which is a good thing.
Our biggest worry is scams. Her son won’t contrary her and she keeps a large balance in checking. Her sister lost everything in a Jamaican Sweepstakes Scam. The scammers had people in the Assisted Living facility working her over.

In Las Vegas I recently paid for a $1.21 purchase with a $100. No problem...they didn’t blink.

A bakery employee in Billings once accused me of trying to pass a fake $100 bill when in fact it was just one of the newest $100 bills. A deputy in the bakery told the clerk to calm down and that the bill was fine.

Ignorant people is the problem.

Had same experience breaking a 100 about 5 years ago. I will never open an account with that bank now.

They have cash. I am on the supervisor board of a local credit union and quarterly I show up one day and do surprise cash counts, review reports and accounts etc...

Last time I did a reconciliation this little old credit union had a little over $350,000 in cash on hand. The bank is just being bitchy because your taking a chunk of cash out of their vault. If it falls on the first of the month aka mothers day for the SSI check drawers, then the bank might have to make arrangements to borrow cash from another bank which they have to pay interest on.

Maybe it was a proposal, then. Every so often we hear about proposals to ban pennies, so maybe this is in that category. I think the store I was in was suspicious of someone trying to pass a $100 bill for a transaction of a few dollars. When I worked for the NJTP I'd hear stories from toll collectors (back when they had them) of patrons paying a 50 cent toll with a $100. They always said the perps were driving cars with NY plates.

I think banks are an extension of the government now. They track and report lots to the government. In return they get deals from the government.

Years and years ago (1960s) I was in the checkout line with my mother. A lane or two over a guy paid for his groceries with a $1000 bill. You should have the checker shriek!

They track and report what they have to. Not a page more.

I’ve been through a bank examiner audit. Trust me, they would not be as “prickly” if the banks were getting handouts.

Don’t confuse “Investment banks” for community or commercial banks.
