Reporter seems clueless.

It's the first Young Hero Award from the Medal of Honor Society.

There is no “Congressional Medal of Honor” award.
The MOH is awarded by the President, “in the name of Congress.
Hence the incorrect term “Congressional Medal of Honor.”

It is officially called the Medal of Honor.

It's just blatant incompetence and ignorance of things military.

I recall reading a major feature story (entire page) in the WP a couple of decades ago lamenting that the TOW antitank missle system did not work, and that we were therefore very vulnerable to Russian tanks. They talked about the cost of the TOW, number deployed, etc....

But upon reading the article, it was apparent that the author had misunderstood troop comments that it was the MILES laser simulation system for TOW weapons wasn't working. Likely because tankers who didn't want to lose the exercise put some mud on the sensors.

The entire article was a major criticism of the Reagan defense buildup, and argued that an expensive, critical weapons system had failed. In reality, the reporter was a moron.

BS...idiot reporters. This isn’t THE Congressional MOH. It may be a medal of honor, but not the BIG KAHUNA.

Technically correct, but quite wrong from a literary standpoint. Since the medal is given "in the name of Congress", it is given under their authority and is de facto, their medal, thus Congressional Medal of Honor, but this is only vernacular and was used in the title of the press release, hence the reason I used it.

The President may award, and present in the name of Congress, a medal of honor of appropriate design, with ribbons and appurtenances, to a person who, while a member of the naval service, distinguishes himself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. 10 U.S. Code § 6241 - Medal of honor. USC 10

Anybody who wants better info on this would be well-served to check out the story that aired on CBS Sunday Morning yesterday, 3/27. They did it as a follow-on to the original story about the young man giving the $20 to the soldier at the Cracker Barrel restaurant. The TV story had more info about the MOH Society and their recognition program.

If anybody follows my advice to see that story, please come back to the thread with a response to my post. I have a further opinion on the entire matter I’d like to bounce off another FReeper.

But there is a Congressional Medal of Honor Society.

Send them a letter and tell them they are wrong.

As a still serving military member I make sure whenever I deal with the press they get it right. In my 28 years of service I have never seen this. I contacted the writer of the article and she apologized and said they would update the web site. Lets hope they do so quickly.

OK, I wrote the reporter a polite e-mail to correct her erroneous headline and she replied promptly in the following manner:

"Thank you...This was according to his Mom's quote. I will change it on our website."

Thank you for clearing that up. I was a bit shocked until I read your post.

Too bad the idiot who wrote this could not be bothered with doing a little homework.
