How Men and Women Want Different Things in Retirement
The Wall Street Journal ^ | March 20, 2016 | Lisa Ward

Posted on 03/21/2016 5:02:05 AM PDT by tlozo

A study finds that men are far more motivated than women to retire so they can spend time with their spouses. Spending more quality time with your partner is one reason to retire, right? Well, that may depend on whether you ask a man or a woman—and the difference may be a warning sign for men... While nearly 60% of men said having time to spend with their spouse or partner was a strong factor influencing their decision to retire, only 43% of women said the same. Far more women, 71%, cited the prospect of spending time with their grandchildren. (For men, that figure was 67%.) One possible factor in those differences: “It seems that women may want to retire so they can have time to provide emotional support” for their families, rather than simply enjoy more time with their spouses, says Kathy Slovin, director of consumer insight at Fidelity. She points to another set of questions from the survey: More women than men (36% to 29%) said a relative depended on them for emotional support; for grandchildren in particular, those numbers were 20% for women and 13% for men... “It affects their overall health and longevity,” says Eran Shor, an associate professor of sociology at McGill University. In an analysis of 104 academic studies, he and his co-authors found that men generally were less healthy and had higher mortality rates than women when single, divorced or widowed. “Men have more to lose” if their spouse dies, Prof. Shor says, explaining that since women traditionally are the caregivers in a family, providing both emotional and physical support if a family member is sick, they tend to be less socially isolated, even in the absence of a spouse.

A Disturbing Look at the New Retirement

The End of Retirement When you can’t afford to stop working

Bad Math and a Coming Public Pension Crisis

It has only been during the last 80 years that the concept of millions of able bodies men and women planning to spend 20 to 30 years in "retirement" has existed. Throughout all of human history, this concept en mass for a population segment this large was not even something that was contemplated, much less affordable for society.

I believe the system is about to break down very soon. The combination of the global collapse, the stock bubble, and the economic "re-set" that is being planned will change things very rapidly.

men and women are different, who knew? Next they’ll tell us that little girls like to play with dolls, and wear princess dresses, and little boys like to play with trucks and toy soldiers.

That’s why women think a retired spouse sort of gets in the way. Poor guys.

Having spent the last 25 years taking care of parents, babies, kids, parents again, uncles, aunts, and now parents...again, I just want to be alone in my house. I won’t be “re-tired.” I am simply tired.

Why do men die before their wives?

Because they want to.

There’s something to be said for men not getting married, simply going MGTOW.

The women I associate with always and I mean always put the grandkids before anything else.
Grandkids no matter what age get in the way of vacations, holidays and special occasions and don’t seem to appreciate the input from the grandparent unless theres a $$ attached to it.
Its quite simple, those with grandkids are grandmothers and act it.
It makes them older, boring and really not very exciting.

I spend my time with the one with no kids. She acts younger looks younger than her age.I suppose cause she’s not a Grammie

Retired now. I’m 62. Social security and a house/ira worth $1.7 mil. I could afford to take care of a younger woman. Take her to/from work, give her a complete body rubdown when she comes home and have dinner ready. She would have to be 10 years younger(working age). My ‘space’ is the daytime when I can read, workout, and enjoy an appetiser with 2 light beers at the sports bar + take a nap. When I bring her home and the rubdown is done I get to take advantage of her in her spoiled state. When that’s done we eat together/talk and I then retreat to my own room alone until bedtime.

Heaven. Will it happen? I’ll die first. Suppose I could move to Thailand.

Keep in mind that most women hate to see you enjoying yourself without them. That will increase now that you finally have time to fish, play golf etc.

I live in the Philippines. I am very happy with my wife. I am 68, she 31. It's numbers... and a Filipina woman will spoil you and spoil you...

You must not have grandkids. I have 7 and occasionally their activities do take precedence over ours but it’s well worth it. No, they don’t appreciate it only when there’s $$ attached, they love having us at their games, plays etc. They grow up fast and we’ve formed an incredible bond with each one of them. My husband and I are far from boring and lead very full life.
