Trump Doubles Down on Theory Romney’s Not Really Mormon
National Review ^ | March 20, 2016 | Tom S. Elliott

On Friday, Donald Trump questioned whether Mitt Romney is actually Mormon. “I have many friends that live in Salt Lake City — and by the way, Mitt Romney is not one of them,” Trump said during a Salt Lake City speech. ”Are you sure he’s a Mormon? Are we sure?”

This is the third time Trump has questioned the faith of one of his opponents, despite having criticized the practice of questioning other people’s faith, ABC’s George Stephanopoulos pointed out this morning during an interview with Trump. “Why do you keep doing it?” he asked.

Here’s Trump’s reply:

With Mitt Romney — well, first of all, with Mitt Romney, I was saying to the Mormons, Mormons are very smart people. And I said it in a joking way, but they can take it, you can take it any way you want. The Mormons are very smart people. I know many Mormons. I don’t think Mitt Romney is a smart person. I never have thought he was a smart person, but the Mormons are very smart people. So I said, are you sure he’s a Mormon? And I’m not going to change it because I think Mitt Romney has proven to be not a smart person. As far as Ted Cruz, he’s one of the greatest liars and biggest liars I have ever known. He lies about so much. He lies about things that he shouldn’t be lying about. He lies about things that don’t matter. I tell people, and I think that’s why Ted Cruz has lost the Evangelical vote, look what he did with Ben Carson, who has endorsed me. Look what he did to Ben Carson. He said Ben Carson in Iowa has left. He’s out of the campaign, vote for me.

What Mitt says about Trump:
Trumpism has become associated with racism, misogyny, bigotry, xenophobia, vulgarity and, most recently, threats and violence. I am repulsed by each and every one of these

What Trump said about Mitt: He choked and didn’t win the election. Are we sure he’s mormon.

And you side with Mit??????

There’s a lot of righteous hatred in this country right now.....so he’s in good company.

Romney is from a huge Mormon family, I have met several relatives of his. Not all people from a huge Mormon family stay Mormon, my husband is from a huge Mormon family that goes back to the beginning of LDS and he is not a Mormon.

I do believe Romney is a Mormon, but some of my Mormon friends say he is not a “real” Mormon. I have noticed he usually does not say he is a Mormon or LDS when asked about religion, he usually says he is a Christian unless he is looking for votes in Utah.

So Trump doesn't think Romney is smart enough to be a Mormon - but he thinks de Blasio is gonna make New York City great again ?
He is a fine judge or people. If he doesn't shoot himself in the foot, and somehow gets elected - I hope he surrounds himself with advisers that he doesn't choose himself.

Mormons are smart people, Romney is not a smart person, so Romney isn’t a Mormon....

I see logic is not a Trump strong point....

I don't think voters care whether Trump thinks Romney is a Mormon.

It isn't about religion or even Mormonism.

Mormons are smart people.

Romney says he is a Mormon.

Are you sure Romney is a Mormon?

Sheesh. You can lead a horse to water, but...

That is the most asinine line of reasoning I've ever heard of. Since Trump considers himself a smart person then does that mean he thinks he's a Mormon?

Is he a Mormon? Romney is pretty liberal. Are real Mormons liberal or is that like pro abortion catholics? Fake.

I get where you're coming from on that.

It's fair game to question anyone's faith, and, when you do that, you put yourself up for judgement about whether you're being sincere in that questioning or not - whether you're just going for political points.

For the Pope to go after Trump, is to try to score political points for the left. For Trump to go after Romney, is to score points for his campaign, which in his mind is to benefit the right. Same thing - right?

Absolutely not- because the Pope has no place sticking his nose in this, and it's right that he got it punched.

But questioning someone's faith? Of course it's fair game - people lie about their faith and use it all the time for social advantage. Trump actually hasn't used it that much - he let's his pasts speak for itself, good or bad. What's not fair game (actually it's fair, but lame - nothing is really 'unfair') is a Pope sticking his nose into our politics. That's what was really noxious about it, not the questioning of the faith. Trump was right to swat him down. If Mitt wants to swat Trump back - let him find a way.

This is war, but it's not the lefty Pope's war. It suggests he doesn't have a full grasp of his own faith or worldly role.

Trump is just taunting - and who knows - maybe a significant number of Mormons find Mitt to be a phony - practicing the outward rituals but not with God in his heart. He certainly appears to be not all that much more than a goody goody - often those are the worst religious fakes. Often they don't realize it.

I have no way of knowing that Mitt is actually with God, or just pretends to be, or thinks he is but isn't. Usually it's the 3rd category that cause the most damage.

Look at it another way Mitt Romney is fair game. Mitt himself declared, loud and clear, for all the world to hear that he was going after Trump any way he could. Donald Trump never said a word about Romney before that.

Mitt deserves everything Donald Trump throws at him.

You just don’t understand...

He may have gotten 17% in FL and 13% in OH, but Ted will win those states in November. Using the little known Cubanadian ju-jitsu technique.

You are a silly person. Trump has absolute control of everything he says. Look into his opposition to the NWO. You will be shocked to learn he is one of very few gazilionairs who not only oppose banks taking over countries but is running specifically to stop them. Why do you think the power elites are apoplectic about his candidacy? He represents a threat to their very existence.
