On Saturday evening, Saint Peter’s Basilica will commemorate “Earth Hour” by switching off all the lights on its iconic façade and dome, joining a host of other world monuments in demonstrating “concern for the future of our planet.”

Back in the twenties, in honor of the invention of the light bulb, lights around the country were turned off for a short time one night. We don’t honor anything much anymore; protesting is much edgier.

I think our national ‘slogan’ of In God We Trust,
