Pentagon skips tests on key component of U.S.-based missile defense system
Los Angeles Times ^ | 3/17/16 | David Willman

Against the advice of its own panel of outside experts, the U.S. Missile Defense Agency is forgoing tests meant to ensure that a critical component of the nation’s homeland missile defense system will work as intended. The tests that are being skipped would evaluate the reliability of small motors designed to help keep rocket interceptors on course as they fly toward incoming warheads. (Snip) But in order to stay on schedule for a planned expansion of the GMD system, none of the 40 thrusters that are being installed on 10 new interceptors will undergo hot-fire testing, government officials told the Los

They did do some Mk 14 tests in Maryland at the torpedo station IIRC but shot them from barges and never out of submarines thus the deep running part of the fiasco went undiscovered.

And of course the double exploder bugs were not found either.

Concrete is tested when poured to verify its strength (at least for major projects)...Trump poured a lot of concrete, Obama didn’t pour any, and I suspect a lot of the people running military projects wouldn’t know the first thing about the need to test.

Trump would...and an article like this would not be ignored by him - but will be until he’s finally in office.

My understanding is that there was a total of 2 full up live fire tests of MK14 torpedoes before WWII. One of the two torpedoes fired failed to detonate on target.

WWII experience appears to have a failure rate of well over 50%

That cartoon really hits home.

I was in a similar position once, with a delivery impending, I went one step over the project engineer and warned the next level manager of a high probability of failure. I got reamed thoroughly by the project engineer for doing so.

And once the failure occurred as I predicted, the reamer didn’t even have the courtesy to apologize.

Another two weeks to finish testing, and everything would have been fine.

Funny thing about the Mark 14s, the German’s TI torpedo had the same characteristics and same faults, namely running 10’ deeper than programmed.

By cutting budgets so they can demand “proper” representation of all Muslims and homo’s, by not restraining Pentagon errors, by promoting ignorant yes-men and incompetent women to meet race and sex goals.

True, Very true.

The Patriot software was run-out from rushed changes to Gulf War I. It failed and the next few Scuds landed as the Patriots missed, the field troopers removed the changes, the missiles began hitting again.

I’d like to see more about the “outside experts,” before I’ll buy this story hook, line and sinker. More testing = more dollars spent = more profit for defense contractors. This story is lacking in context and depth—so far seems based on remarks by one guy, who may have rolled into a cushy job for his twilight years.
