Well, I have doubts about that. They're probably dissembling and didn't "officially" advise. It was probably informal and then spiked by the Chicago political machinery.
It was a good call by Trump. His supporters were likely to kick some ass, but no doubt people were going to get hurt. Perhaps the SS ordered him not to attend. They can do that and you ignore it at your own peril.
Protesters are either looking to incite violence or perpetuate violence. Judging by some of the Bernie signs along with militant blacks (BLM) these people were looking to do both upon the Trump supporters.
Trump took the Kung fu way. Avoid the fight altogether and leave the left hanging out there with their bats in their hands and no music for the party.

Trump and Trump alone made the call. He deserves full credit for sacrificing his own free speech rights (temporarily) to protect the safety of those who came for the purpose of denying it to him. That makes him the bigger man, and a true statesmanlike leader.
The Chicago Police would have loved to crack a few heads and give the news cameras some nice footage all night with bleeding black yout’s being cuffed-and-stuffed. Can’t you just hear Megyn gloating over that scene? And May Rahm would just blame it all on Trump and look like a hero.
Don’t lose sight of the fact that this was a great decision by Trump and the Police statement is self-serving to the Mayor and his cronies.
