Keith Emerson, the outsized co-founding keyboardist in Emerson Lake and Palmer has died. Long-time bandmate Carl Palmer’s publicist has posted a message that confirms Emerson’s passing last night (March 10) in Santa Monica, Calif. He was 71. “Keith was a gentle soul whose love for music and passion for his performance as a keyboard player will remain unmatched for many years to come,” Palmer said. “He was a pioneer and an innovator whose musical genius touched all of us in the worlds of rock, classical and jazz.”

Asia had a fantastic first album in 1982, but their next album was just awful (I don't know if they ever made another).

Flies don’t even drop this fast. Sad. Recent deaths make you realize just how many great musicians there were in the 70s. I am actually surprised, given the lifestyle, how many of the greats are still around.

There is a single moment in his Piano Concerto #1 that redeems the whole piece. You don't need to be a rocker to get it. RIP for a seminal player.

Actually, he was a lucky man. Lucky enough to be given an incredible musical talent from the beginning. But now we just take a pebble and cast it in the sea as he’s gone to the final hoedown in the sky. But why when he was only 71? Ah, that’s the endless enigma.

I was a big YES fan and really liked Steve Howes’ guitar work. When he joined Asia, his guitar work was featured much less.

Like you mentioned, Asia had a couple of catchy singles - “Heat of the Moment” and “Only Time Will Tell” remain in memory.

I actually enjoyed the entire first album, even the stuff that wasn't on the radio.

The second album was clearly a rush job to get sales and it showed, it sounded like a bad imitation of Journey.

No, but the depression that a keyboardist might suffer would. Especially if he were dumb enough to see a shrink and start taking meds.

It's going to be a sobering few decades for those of us who grew up with late 60's to early 90's music.

Classically-trained Emerson, incredible keyboard chops, enjoyed your work - hell, still do enjoy it.

On Jackson Browne’s “Red Neck Friend” (probably my alltime favorite JB song), piano credits went to a “Rockaday Johnny”...later identified as Elton John.

Some some trivial information that popped into my head when I read your post.
