During a speech in Ankara, at an event dedicated to International Women's Day, Emine Erdogan, the wife of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, expressed her positive attitude to harems of the Ottoman Empire. "In many works of art, we can see women obsessed with lust for power and pleasure. The harem was a school for members of the Ottoman dynasty and an educational establishment for preparing women for life. Mothers of sultans were in charge of all that," Emine Erdogan said at a conference devoted to Ottoman sultans and their mothers. This commentary from the Turkish first lady caused a storm of negative reactions from many Turkish people, particularly women. Harem were composed of infidel women (mostly slaves) lorded over by muslim women.

can you imagine having 50 sexy muslim women in your home? va-va-voom. Why, every day would be a holiday. I’d blow myself up just to get away from them.
Why do women have smaller feet? So they can stand closer to the counter.

Oh the life in a harem, as mother of a sultan.
You weren’t the wife of the sultan; you were his concubine. The sultans gave up marriage after the wife of one of them was captured and raped, an insult that would never again occur. A concubine raped - not such a loss of face.
A life of culture and art with the other concubines - the art of metaphorical and actual poison as they schemed to be in position of favor with the sultan. The tiny little room to call their own, the warren-like passages, the fresh air and sunshine of the courtyard. The advancement of medicine - small-pox inoculation, because any illness would sweep through close quarters in a heartbeat.
The company of men kidnapped from their homelands and castrated.
The competition and rivalry where concubines assassinated each other’s children.
The enlightened Turkish mode of preventing a civil war of succession on the death of the sultan - all his sons but one strangled with silken cords, down to the suckling babies, and the pregnant concubines sewn in sacks and thrown into the sea!
