Cruz ready for contested GOP convention
The Washington Examiner ^ | 3/9/2016 | Ryan Lovelace

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is more comfortable with a contested convention than a brokered convention that's decided by power brokers in July.

In an interview with Fox News' Megyn Kelly, Cruz explained his reasoning for welcoming a fight on the floor of the GOP convention.

"A contested convention is a different thing where you go, if no one gets 1,237 [delegates] and you've got two front-runners, look Reagan and Ford battled it out in a contested convention. That's what conventions are for," Cruz told Fox News. "If you're fighting between the candidates who have earned the votes of the people, and it's the delegates at the convention who've been elected to do that. That's the way the system works."

The senator has previously expressed reservations about a 'brokered' convention and said it would bring about a "manifest revolt," which caused Fox News to label Cruz's new remarks as a 'revision.' But a brokered convention would involve GOP power brokers settling the convention, whereas Cruz wants the selected delegates to choose from the candidates who make it to a contested convention, so Cruz's statements do not necessarily conflict.

Some political commentators have speculated that the Republican Party could change its rules to lessen the criteria necessary to compete in a contested convention, and thus influence the nomination from outside the formal voting process.

As insurgent candidates Donald Trump and Cruz continue to run the table in the primaries, the Republican Party's leadership may begin exploring all options to shape the nomination this summer.

Political suicide. I hope Trump runs 3rd party.

There is a push going on since yesterday to change the language. They are saying "contested" convention instead of "brokered" convention.

A contested convention is now supposedly when the candidates whose names are entered into nomination fight it out for delegates in later round voting.

A brokered convention is now supposedly when party insiders work out behind closed doors who will swoop in and be the nominee.

If the party doesn't mess with rule 40, and Cruz and Trump are the only candidates who meet the threshold to be entered into nomination, then sure - - let them each make the case for crossover delegate votes in additional rounds of voting.

However, if the party makes an 11th hour change to the rules to allow only one state winners instead of eight (Rubio), or eliminate the rule altogether (Romney, Bush), then it is effectively a stolen convention.

Mat 7:15 "But beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are savage wolves. 6 By their fruits you shall know them. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes or figs from thistles?"

Beware of the false conservatives. By their associations you shall know them. Are outsiders gathered from the insiders? Anti-establishment from the establishment?

So, you are okay with spreading lies to support your candidate? Should I consider this as indicative of all Trump supporters, or is it just you?

Only a sitting President gets to nominate a Supreme Court Justice. That nominee doesn’t become a member of SCOTUS unless he/she is confirmed by the US Senate so your scenario is neither possible nor helpful in determining who could become the Republican nominee for president.

What scam? This is the way it has worked for many years. A “contested” convention is a contest between the candidates who have gone through the primary. If Trump is so good at making deals he should win it in a walk. Cruz has said he is still absolutely against a “brokered” convention. If you are going so far in the tank for Trump at least use facts.

Thanks. I think you’re the first person on the thread that either (a) actually read the post and/or (b) understands the difference between “brokered” and “contested”.

Brokered essentially means the party leadership chooses the nominee. Contested means the delegates get to fight it out and pick the winner.

How about some sources to back up that list of accusations? And you might want to consider giving your fellow Freepers credit for being well-informed regardless of the candidate they favor most.

Felito is the fraud on stilts. “Ted” is not his name, he is a construct of the Bush machine, he lied that he did not know he was a Canadian citizen, he lied that he had liquidated savings to run his senate campaign, he lied that he ‘forgot’ to report $1,000,000.00 dollars to the FEC, he lies about his piety and trains his children to fake prayers, he lies about VOTER VIOLATIONS!!!! to intimidate voters.

Oily Felito is a false front. A gray globalist in Tea Party colors, a marionette with so many strings that they are getting tangled at this point.

Another reason we don't need another lawyer in the White House.

Cruz was against a "brokered" convention, but suddenly isn't against a "contested" convention. Very convenient now that the GOPe sees they can use him to take down Trump and are going to open their coffers to him massively.

It makes him sound like Clinton at his height of dissembling.

Note: I finally put on a new tag line after four long years......

You take a Bible verse as your signature, but spread lies to support your dishonest candidate.

Live with yourself.

The same Ted Cruz who cut a deal with McConnell to sell out conservative primary candidates in order to get a pat on the head to run for President along with Rand Paul.

The same Cruz who co-authored the article with Paul Ryan to support TPA and supported the amendment in the Senate that added the TPA legislation to a house bill.

The same Ted Cruz who voted for Closure on the Corker amendment giving Obama authority to enact the Iranian deal giving away Congresses authority to review such treaties.

The same Cruz who opposed the gang of eight legislation in the Senate but it passed the Senate anyway. Only Dave Brat’s defeat of Cantor stopped the bill from becoming law. The person who fought the legislation the hardest in the Senate, Jeff Sessions, endorsed Trump.”

Oh yeah? Well OK, if you insist on being FACTUAL about it.

I am fully aware of the process for appointing a supreme court justice. My scenario remains a valid scenario.

Cruz could support Trump in the nomination for the party in exchange for Trump (when he is elected President); nominate Cruz for the vacant SCOTUS justice position.

Yep. Watching the Cruzers excuse Neil Bush joining his campaign as money manager (or whatever), along with the opening up of the GOPe donors for him will make for a lot of cognitive dissonance in the Cruzer camp.

I suggest we invest in popcorn sales......

Make hay while the sun shines.

It even works on Wall Street.......

This next week is going to be big on popcorn, it's sort of like the Super Bowl. If Trump takes both Ohio and Florida, it's going to be a sad day for Cruzers and the GOPe.

Short popcorn, and bet on tissue futures next Tuesday night if the exit polls show Trump winning both.........

:-)

That sort of slick routine is what led to Nixon being called "Tricky Dicky", how about "Crafty Cruzy" for the junior Senator from Texas?

Just sayin' ... if Cruz is going to make common cause with the GOPe, he's going to have to face the consequences at some point.
