Mitt Romney has instructed his closest advisers to explore the possibility of stopping Donald Trump at the Republican National Convention, a source close to Romney's inner circle says.
The 2012 GOP nominee's advisers are examining what a fight at the convention might look like and what rules might need revising.
"It sounds like the plan is to lock the convention," said the source.
Romney is focused on suppressing Trump's delegate count to prevent him from accumulating the 1,237 delegates he needs to secure the nomination.
But implicit in Romney's request to his team to explore the possibility of a convention fight is his willingness to step in and carry the party's banner into the fall general election as the Republican nominee. Another name these sources mentioned was House Speaker Paul Ryan, Romney's running mate in 2012.

Many Cruz supporters have said that if Trump is the Republican nominee they will stay home, and many others have said they will vote Hillary if Trump is the Republican nominee.

Who was the candidate that rank-and-file working class GOP voters wanted rather than McCain? If nobody showed up to run effectively against him, is it any surprise that he won? Trump had to change venues 3 times for one appearance early on because he had so many people who wanted to attend. He didn’t disappoint them-—his people made the arrangements & they ended up in a larger venue—with less than 2 days to make those changes. His people know how to think fast & on their feet. The voters have spoken and will speak in the weeks ahead. Those who go to the polls and choose their candidates expect the process to be followed and the majority delegate winner to be the nominee. Thwarting the will of the party voters disqualifies those who do not submit to the will of the party voters. Those who oppose the majority delegate winner must step aside or be ejected.
