Con artists routinely drop such comments in plain sight just for a cheap thrill. They use it as internal justification for screwing the mark, effectively , 'If they're that dumb they deserve it...'
Even his admirers say he's totally different in private, albeit the impression they get is complementary. Yet they should take the hint that the man is a chameleon.
