ROCKUMENTARY: FEBRUARY 27, 1973
Defense attorneys who appeared in his court knew him as "Maximum John." He was a no-nonsense jurist who ended up handling the case of a third-rate burglary of the Democratic Party's offices at the Watergate complex. Judge John Sirica would become the man of the year as one of the burglars turned state's evidence and began the long process that brought down Richard NIxon.
Cue the Rockumentary theme on Turntable #1!
(This was a backup band at Motown that consisted of the Funk Brothers and pickup musicians from the Detroit Symphony.)
The San Remo Golden Strings: "Festival Time"
#10: John Denver: "Rocky Mountain High"
Henry John Deutschendorf (1943-97) was born in Roswell (NM). His father was an Air Force officer who set three speed records in the B-58 Hustler bomber and earned a place in the Air Force Hall of Fame. The family moved often, making it difficult for John to make friends and fit in. While living in Tucson, he was happy, but his father was transferred to Alabama and then Texas. Attending high school in Fort Worth was a distressing experience, so he boosted his father's car and ran away to California to begin a music career. His father flew to California in a friend's jet to retrieve him.
John studied Architecture at Texas Tech in Lubbock and sang in a folk music group. He dropped out of college in 1963 and moved to Los Angeles, where he sang in folk clubs. In 1965, he joined the Chad Mitchell Trio.
In 1969, John abandoned the group to pursue a solo career and released his first album for RCA. Two years earlier, he had made a self-produced demo of some of the songs he played, and he included a song he had written called "Leaving on a Jet Plane." John made several copies and gave them out as presents for Christmas. Producer Milt Okun, who had produced the Chad Mitchell Trio and Peter, Paul and Mary, had become John's producer. Okun brought the unreleased song to Peter, Paul and Mary, and their version was a huge hit.
RCA did not actively promote the album with a tour, so John embarked on an impromptu tour throughout the Midwest, stopping at towns and offering to play free concerts at local venues. When he was successful in persuading a school, college, American Legion hall, or local coffee house to let him play, he would spend a day or so distributing posters in the town and could usually be counted on to show up at the local radio station, guitar in hand, offering himself for an interview. With his foot in the door as the composer of a hit song, he was successful in gaining valuable promotional air time, usually featuring one or two songs performed live. After several months of this touring schedule, he had sold enough albums to persuade RCA to take a chance on extending his recording contract. He had also built a sizable and solid fan base.
John recorded two more albums in 1970. "Poems, Prayers and Promises" was a breakthrough, and his career flourished from then on.

I hate the IRS, but Trump should just show the stuff. Otherwise it makes it look like he has something to hide....

I think that we both blessed. I met Admiral Nimitz while I was in boot camp in San Diego! He was the guest-of-honor at our boot camp graduation ceremony, April, ‘62. I was in the ‘welcoming committee’ as his limo drove up. He spoke with us lowly white hats. He was a very down-to-Earth- kind of guy!

#84: Lou Reed: "Walk on the Wild Side"
This song was 40 years ahead of its time. Before the whole transgender thing went mainstream, it was something kept in a very, very dark closet. This video was made using Andy Warhol's models who were mentioned in the song. The song itself is depressing, and the video bring the sadness home.

Taking Notice
February 27, 2016
"Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation?"
Job 38:4
When I clean my house for a special event, I become discouraged because I think that guests won't notice what I clean, only what I don't clean. This brings to mind a larger philosophical and spiritual question: Why do humans more quickly see what's wrong than what's right? We are more likely to remember rudeness than kindness. Crimes seem to receive more attention than acts of generosity. And disasters grab our attention more quickly than the profound beauty all around us.
But then I realize I am the same way with God. I tend to focus on what He hasn't done rather than on what He has, on what I don't have rather than on what I have, on the situations that He has not yet resolved rather than on the many He has.
When I read the book of Job, I am reminded that the Lord doesn't like this any more than I do. After years of experiencing prosperity, Job suffered a series of disasters. Suddenly those became the focus of his life and conversations. Finally, God intervened and asked Job some hard questions, reminding him of His sovereignty and of everything Job didn't know and hadn't seen (Job 38-40).
Whenever I start focusing on the negative, I hope I remember to stop, consider the life of Job, and take notice of all the wonders God has done and continues to do.
When you think of all that's good, give thanks to God.
When confronted with God's power, Job said, "I am unworthy--how can I reply to you? I put my hand over my mouth" (Job 40:4). His reaction is consistent with the reaction of others in the Bible. After seeing a vision of heaven's throne room, Isaiah declared, "Woe to me! . . . I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips" (Isa. 6:5). After Jesus provided a miraculous catch of fish, Peter cried out, "Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!" (Luke 5:8). When we see God's power, we can begin to grasp that our sin is no match for His great love.

I’m back....Mom called. She dropped a chocolate pecan “turtle”, under the baseboard heater, she thought. My SIL made them for her for her birthday a couple weeks ago.
I used a yardstick and found fuzzies and a couple ibuprofen pills, but no turtle. The only choice was to get down on my knees and look under the bed. The lost is found!! My knees can’t hurt any worse than they already do. Thankfully my chiropractor is back from some sort of shoulder surgery and I have an appointment in the morning.
The office move happened today. After they took away our computers I drove to the new place, got my new badge, and walked to the new space...it’s tiny. And it is not a very pleasant or inviting workplace. In fact it’s pretty depressing. Should be interesting. I’m going back for a couple hours Sunday and hopefully they’ve got payroll all set up. They were still painting today, and the “cubicle” is not completely set up.

Do you remember the producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff? Their names have popped up here and there, but now they hit their stride in developing the Philadelphia Sound of the Seventies.

#80: Vicki Lawrence: "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia"
Vicki, who had made her career with Carol Burnett, had married country songwriter Bobby Russell, and this Russell tune became a huge hit. Due to some poor engineering, the critical lines in the song weren't easily picked up from the disk, so I've posted a version with lyrics.
