‘We do not need a militia of toddlers': If Iowa law passes, children can use handguns
washington post ^ | 02/24/2016

The state’s House of Representatives voted Tuesday to pass a bill that would permit children under age 14 to use "a pistol, revolver or the ammunition" while under direct parental supervision.

...

The current law, which some have called a "Civil War-era law," has no restrictions on children using long guns or shotguns under a parent’s supervision but prohibits them from using handguns.

...

"Allowing people to learn at a young age the respect that a gun commands is one of the most important things you can do," Highfill told The Washington Post. The alternative, he said, is "turning 18 with no experience."

Highfill said the bill "gives the power back to parents" to make the decisions.

Nathan Gibson, told The Post that much of Iowa is "farm country" where parents teach their children to shoot pistols and revolvers on open land, and where some children - like his - enjoy shooting for sport.

Until the past few years, he said, restrictions on children using "guns their size" were not enforced.

"Most people in Iowa don't even know it's on the books," Gibson said about the current restrictions.

Sounds good to me. Liberals have a virtual monopoly on propagandizing kids. Let’s start pushing that back and what a good way to start.

Yes we do need a militia of toddlers. There's a reason they call them "Infantry!

So bloody what!

I took my 9-year-old out to the range to shoot a few handguns (mostly .22s, but one .38 from a heavy revolver) and an AK. The antis are acting like the kiddos will be open carrying in the local grocery store or movie house. Sheesh, there is PARENTAL SUPERVISION!

Beeyootiful!

We grew up with firearms, and learned how to handle them to the point muzzle discipline and safety were habitual.

If you learn to do things safely at an early age (under adult supervision), you will keep that for the rest of your life.

We were safer firearm handlers at 9 years old (when we started deer hunting) than some of the adults we saw.

My 14 year old daughter is pretty accurate at 10 yards with my .45. But she’s been shooting with me since she was about 9. My 9 year old hasn’t shot the .45 but is pretty good with my .38.

I expect that law was not enforced in Iowa.

At 14 years old I pedaled my bike to the local hardware store and plunked down $37.95 of hard earned paper route money. Minutes later I rode away with a cardboard box containing my first purchased gun, â Ruger Standard .22. The only paper work was a reciept. I passed it along to my stepdaughter a few years ago and in a few more years two granddaughters (and maybe a grandson please, please God!) Will learn to shoot with it.

I remember shooting handguns in Iowa when I was 9 or 10. I am pretty sure the adults did not even know that was a law.

Mind your own business you statist bimbo.

I seem to recall a story about a frontier mom who's child was teething so she gave him a wooden gun to gnaw on.

A couple of outlaws came by and thought they would scope out the place for a night raid. One peeked in the cradle and saw junior chewing on a gun butt.

They decided not to attempt the place cause even the babies were armed.

My dad wasn’t a big gun guy, but some of my friends dads were veterans of WWII and Korea. We were every so often invited to look at their dads guns (with parental supervision, of course) and ask questions about them. They took the mystery out of the equation and made us understand that guns were tools, no more, no less.. It’s certainly better than the “forbidden fruit” approach some hoplophobe parents are using these days. Kids now grow up with a fascination with firearms, without any practical experience or knowledge of how to properly handle them. That makes for a bad mix, IMO.

What’s the problem. Parental supervision is key here. Also is parental rights to raise your children as you see fit.

As long as they can handle it, so what?

Good to fend off those overcoat pervs in the park.

Thank you!

I was wondering what happened to that Christmas family photo taken when I was a kid.

Good memories....

Way things are going — kids are the most in need of self-protection.

Parents try and protect them, they may be liable for “hate crime” status.

I agree fully! All the example the kids get on how to handle guns and what it means in terms of responsibility is from the media--and those aren't the Westerns many of us grew up with, but stuff like 'Boyz in the Hood' and 'The Matrix'. Real bad stuff for an example of how to be.
