Yellowstone type volcanoes are especially dangerous because they are comprised largely of melted continental rock (rhyolitic/granitic). Continental magma is thicker than melted seafloor rock (basaltic) and thus traps more explosive gases. Locations such as the Northwest and Alaska, as well as the Andes, see a mixture of the two. That magma blend is known as andesitic. It is intermediate in terms of its explosiveness. Hawaii-type volcanoes are purely basaltic and lava there flows out smoothly.
