Cruz Campaign Apologizes to Marco Rubio for Spreading False Bible Story

Rick Tyler, the Senior Communications Advisor for Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), issued a public apology after spreading a false story reporting that Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) made a nasty comment to a Cruz staffer about the Bible.

"I want to apologize to Senator Marco Rubio for posting an inaccurate story about him here earlier today," Tyler wrote on Facebook after sharing the false story online. "The story misquoted a remark the Senator made to the staffer. I assumed wrongly that the story was correct."

The false report indicated that Rubio said that there were "not many answers" in the Bible -- when in fact, Rubio commented that "all the answers" were in the book of scripture.

Tyler indicated that he communicated with the Cruz staffer in the video, who explained that Rubio had made a "friendly and appropriate remark" about the Bible.

"Since the audio was unclear, I should not have assumed the story was correct," Tyler wrote. "I've deleted the post because I would not knowingly post a false story. But the fact remains that I did post it when I should have checked its accuracy first. I regret the mistake."

I've seen no EVIDENCE that he did; so maybe he should have but did not - and that's why he got fired. 

FACT:  The Pen State (BTW that's Donald Trump's alma mater isn't it?) student "journalists" posted the speculative question:

"Wish we knew what book he was reading (perhaps Ted Cruz's A Time for Truth?) Comment below and take a guess at what you think he was reading"

FACT: The entire tenor of the question changes based upon the combination of a single consonant (was it "G" or "N"?) - and the title of the book (was it the Bible or Ted Cruz's book?).

FACT: Both of those elements were in flux (was that deliberate or inocent?) throughout the process of revelation.

Sunday, Feb. 21, afternoon: While driving back to Philadelphia, we begin receiving comments on Twitter and the post itself about the contents of the video. Several people question whether Rubio said "not" or "got" before "many answers in there", referring to the book. Later, some suggest maybe he is saying "every answer's in there." We examine the video, breaking down the audio to the very syllable at the beginning of the sentence. We continued to believe we heard an "N" sound.

The student(s) who posted the false caption say they continue to believe they heard (wanted to hear?) an "N".

FACT: Tyler tweetpeated the sensational question that has now blown up in the face of the Pen Students and Cruz campaign.

A Lawyer like Cruz has the common sense to understand what I learned growing up in a LEO family: Nobody is smart enough to lie.

The risk/benefit analysis simply doesn't work out for the kind of conspiracy you're alleging.  What's in if for Cruz - and would anybody even believe Rubio would denigrate the Bible - RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIS KID in the first place?  I wouldn't buy that.

Occam's Razor V.S. Elaborate Consiriacy theory says: Tyler simply didn't think before tweeting (again?) -- and so...

FACT: No more Tyler.

 

Meanwhile -- I wonder if the Generaton XBox bloggers at Pen State (in between exposes on Sexting) are proud or remorseful of the effects rendered by their crappy craftsmanship?

If they couldn't tell G from N - then THEY SHOULDN'T HAVE CAPTIONED THE THING IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Cruz communications director Rick Tyler promoted the Daily Pennsylvanian post on his Twitter and Facebook accounts on Sunday morning. The allegation is that Collins knew.

But the fact is that no person has been yet identified as having told him; and that missing link leaves the open question of what Collins knew at the time he tweetpeated.

Also if Collins knew it was the Bible - why not say so instead of just repeating the baited question?

I view Donald Trump as more Publican than Puritan. How about you ?What denomination or sect do you assemble with ? Do you confess your sins, and if so, how and how frequently ? If not, why not ?

Does a public apology without making amends constitute a confession ?

What he said about communion I can agree with - recognizing the need for forgiveness through the Grace of Christ’s sacrifice is consistent with biblical Christian doctrine.

But then he muddies that with what he says about working where he doesn’t have to be forgiven.

He doesn’t seem to articulate the separation that exists between the Creator and ourselves due to our fallen nature - or the necessity of repentance for membership in the forgiven body of Christ.

I was raised in the LCMS. I currently assemble with EFCA, a bible teaching denomination of the body of Christ.

There are no liturgical confessions or creeds recited - but there is a statement of faith that communicants are advised to understand before partaking.

I confess my sins with various frequency as required. Sometimes in discussion with my wife or others, often in the context of studying the Word - and sometimes just between me and God.

I thought about that along the lines of the one who repented and made a full and complete confession that included damning and ugly sins. Such a one wants to never have to repeat that again, especially with so many witnesses watching us from heaven. Perhaps he does not want to commit sins like that again and have to confess them. I do know we have a Great King and we will all stand in judgment before Him.

Maybe, but I get the impression it’s more of a “I like to be the boss because the boss doesn’t have to be forgiven” kind of thing.

For the last 8 years folks have been rightfully questioning the morality of the current POTUS - and now all of a sudden morality doesn’t matter because “we’re electing a president not a pope”.

I think it's not even so much that the mob is choosing the middle road with Trump - but that Trump is resonating with the collective nature of what always lurks just beyond the fragile moral lattice that keeps the human cultural serpent from devouring itself, again.

In a Christian culture that latice is manifested by the body of Christ: individuals repentantly operating together within the grace of forgiveness, empowered by His Spirit, and encouraged by one another to live within the healthy moral constraints He prescribed for our benefit. 

Can't say I've seen anything that works better; but we're in a place in our history where the liturgical cart has to catch up with, and reform around, the explosive bubble of knowledge that is preceding and outpacing it.

Think about how human culture convulsed in the context of Galileo's day...

Well said, and I’ve often thought the path of this culture and its government is unavoidable. Not just because an evolving world forces structural changes but also that our collective nature, our inherent human frailties, lead us down the same paths as our predecessors in Europe. There will be hardships to deal with but being well grounded spiritually will certainly help to take the sting out of it.

But this significantly changed the meaning of Rubio's words as originally transcribed, as it now purported to show Rubio pointing to the Bible and saying "not a lot of answers in there." Later, the accuracy of that transcription was brought into question due to the unclear audio; upon returning to Philadelphia Sunday evening, we updated the post to reflect uncertainty over what was said...

But Cruz Communications Director Rick Tyler had shared the original post on Twitter and Facebook earlier Sunday.
