COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Donald Trump has emerged as the front-runner for the GOP nomination by winning over roughly a third of Republicans in the early voting states and in preference polls, packing his rallies with men and women, evangelical Christians and military veterans, blue-collar workers and wealthy retirees.

Thank you for your kind reply, but actually I provided no argument for Cruz rather than Trump; I merely provided an explanation of why Cruz could beat Clinton in the general election even though he is not beating Trump for the nomination.

The argument for Cruz in the general election *rather than* Trump is the comparison of their respective negatives; Trump’s have been consistently much higher, but of course that can change over time. A valid counter-argument for Trump would be that he can draw much more support than Cruz among Democrats. While I see this asserted routinely here on FR threads I have not yet seen data to document the assertion.

Then why didn’t Cruz take ONE county in S.C? NOT one county did Cruz take, and Rubio beat him, LOLOLOL

That is exactly correct. People love winning. Winning feels great. If Trump picks up momentum and runs the table through March that feeling of winning will be very hard for people to stay away from.

Yep the only thing that gets Trump elected is Hillary. If Sanders won it would be interesting as both Sanders and Trump have the same core message.

The press is holding their ammo...just like they did John McCain. They are giving him coverage and letting him get away with double-speak. Just wait until Hillary is the nominee and they back her story 100% and tear up Trump. Trump will boycott every news outlet and won’t do any debates because he is treated too unfairly. Last time he tried that he lost.

Polls don’t matter unless Trump is winning! Those are the only polls we can trust. /sarcasm.

We had McCain (helped by the media until he was the nominee). Then he got blown out.

We had Romney the only guy that could have lost to Obama because he was the original Obamacare architect.

Now we have Trump the only guy with unfavorables as high as Hillary’s and the media is helping him for now. It’s a trap.

That said, I believe that Cruz or Rubio can also win, and by more than George W. Bush.

Cruz isn’t taking VA. He’d lose beltway suburbs NOVA 80-20. Take OH and PA off the board after his month long campaign for TPA. The Dem candidates were very careful to oppose TPA/TPP. Cruz is toast in the old rust belt, IMO. Cruz simply doesn’t have a path to 270 Electoral Votes, IMO.

Which means that SC is 78% anti-Cruz using your logic.

We can play this game all night long. Face it, no matter how you try and spin the numbers, your candidate is going to come out on the short end. If I were you, I'd focus on helping my candidate win future contests rather than dwell on those that he lost.

Because against Clinton, Cruz would enjoy all the Republican support, not a split portion of it among a number of other Republicans, assuming that Trump did not run as an independent. Of course the same can be said of the other Republican candidates as well. It is not the case logically that the only person who can win the general is the winner of the nominating contest.

Sorry, you are miscalculating. Dems outnumber us. Cruz needs more than “all the Republican” support to win. Unfortunately, he’s got too much beltway stink on him to ever win the independent vote.

The other 14% seem to hang around here.

It’s OK though, let all the voices by heard.

The substance of your reply is disproved by the actual polling data, showing that Cruz would defeat Hillary while Trump would not. However I will acknowledge that Cruz would have a battle on his hands to expand his support beyond his core constituency.

That grain of salt is always a good idea, Biggirl.

RCP was quite accurate about SC though. The order of finish was correct all the way down. Trump was within .6% of his poll number, and Rubio out performed by almost 4% I think it was, with Cruz outperforming his by about 3%. Also, final RCP averages in SC showed Rubio up .3% over Cruz and Rubio beat Cruz by about .1% I think it was.

That’s impressive polling. Huffpo’s average was off more, but not a lot more. Their polling gave a good indication of what was coming too.

Cheers.

Trump knows the media better than the media does. One big reason he’s winning. Name another candidate who can take on the pope.

The democrats have painted Trump as against life itself. He can’t go anywhere but up once he starts the general.

Of course by election time, “true” conservatives, like all ideologues, will stay home and complain that no one is smart enough to nominate the perfect candidate - like they do in every election.

Trump will take NV, then campaign across the 12 Super Tuesday states, and many people will vote for him because he wins. Many will say, “why vote for the guys who are always far behind Trump fighting for 2nd and 3rd place. Why not vote for a proven winner?”

Trump will take at least 10 of the 12 Super Tuesday states. If he takes 11 or 12, it is all over, because who would continue to donate to Cruz or Rubio?
