That sounds like a guilt complex to me, of course I’m not a psychologist or psychiatrist but I’m taking a shot in the dark.

Yeah, I’m amazed that he didn’t try to turn his life around at that point.
Sounds like his near death experience took him to the gates of hell and his father sent him back to finish the job of destruction.
