Thousands turn out for Scalia's funeral Mass in Washington

Thousands packed into the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington on Saturday morning for a funeral Mass for Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

His flag-draped casket was brought to the church, just a short ride for the funeral procession, from the Supreme Court building on Capitol Hill.

Scalia, 79, died last weekend at a remote Texas ranch. He had spent nearly three decades on the high court. Burial plans have not been announced.

Vice President Joe Biden, former Vice President Dick Cheney and the remaining eight high court justices are attending the service, for one the country’s most influential conservatives.

Justice Clarence Thomas plans a reading from the New Testament, but there will be no eulogy.

As many as 6,000 are expected to attend the service, held on an overcast day in the nation's capitol.

One of Scalia's nine children, the Rev. Paul Scalia, will lead the Mass on Saturday at the Basilica, which can hold at least 3,500 people.

When Obama appeared at Georgetown University he demanded that they cover up all Crucifixes and all references to Jesus Christ. To their eternal shame, the priests who run Georgetown University complied.

The Basilica would not allow Obama to do this.

Really? That's crazy. They should have sternly told him no. Glad the Basilica stood up to him. What a horrible thing to demand.

He can make it a point to travel to Cuba, but can’t make it to Scalia’s funeral service in DC? Disgusting. But maybe it’s better that he’s not there.

They said this morning that it is unprecedented for a President to not attend the funeral of a Supreme Court justice.

If that’s the case, it’s good that this scum of a president set the precedent. He would have spoiled the service.

Many people are relieved that he is not there.

That’s because he can’t believe that a “conservative” on a “conservative” site, is supporting a non-conservative...

Agree.
If I was Scalia kin, I’d be relieved Caliph Baraq is on the front 9 somewhere today.

Was Joe Biden listed in the opening remarks about great people attending? I didn’t hear it. I heard Dick Cheney and Newt Gingrich.

For Catholics and Anglicans, a homily that focuses on the relationship of the deceased and the congregation with the Risen Lord and His saving grace in Eternal Life. Not really a eulogy, but Father Scalalia got in a few good ones about his Dad. An excellent presentation.

The word “great” wasn’t used. “Distinguished” was used and yes, he was mentioned.

It’s in the low 60s in D.C. today. You can bet King Putt is burning up to be on the links, but doesn’t dare. Am confident some media outlets have him staked out. Bathhouse Barry will have to settle for huffing whippets with Reggie and getting a reach around from him. Golf tomorrow.

It symbolizes purification, sanctification, mystery, and awe. You can find incense mentioned in the Old Testament.

I suppose it's also good against bugs. :)
