Cruz’s misleading attack that Trump ‘convinced’ the gov to ‘bulldoze’ a widow’s home

"Trump bankrolled politicians to steamroll the little guy, a pattern of sleaze stretching back decades. Worse? Trump still supports eminent domain today."

Who knew such a wonky topic would find its way into political attacks in the Republican presidential race? An ad released this week by Ted Cruz's presidential campaign lodged a renewed attack on Donald Trump's support for eminent domain and alleged use of the government's powers for private gain, to bully an elderly woman out of her home.

There are two problematic aspects of this ad: the misleading headlines that accompany the narration and the cherry-picked footage of Trump's answers that misrepresent the context of his statements. We took a look at these two elements, the context of the ad and the actual sources of the quotes and footage the ad used.

The Facts

The case

In 1994, the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority, a government agency, attempted to seize an elderly widow's home. The agency tried to invoke "eminent domain," which refers to the government's right to acquire private property for public use.

The house was located near the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City. The agency wanted to turn the house and two other properties over to the Trump Organization. Trump had planned to landscape the area and build a new parking lot, with a waiting area for limousines.

The woman, Vera Coking, was in her 70s and had lived in her home for 37 years. She refused to give it up. Then, a four-year court battle ensued.

Sure it’s ok with the Trumpettes because Donald didn’t wear a hardhat and physically bulldoze the home. No harm, no foul.

“I know, it’s all about winning and not conservatism. “

Not at all, but when you look at “so-called conservatives” we’ve worked to elect, and you compare them to their promises and the results we’ve obtained, it isn’t a pretty picture. Doctrinaire conservatives, who steadfastly demand purity, are really part of our problem. It’s time for some real action, not just verbal BS. Yeah, there’s a chance Trump may disappoint me, but it’s a lot less of a chance than I would take with Cruze, Boobio, Little Yebbie or Kasick!

The ad is 100% accurate. Trump did indeed convince CRDA to bulldoze those homes. Fortunately, a judge stopped them from doing so.

A few years later, the Supreme Court would set a new precedent with Kelo, tilting the balance in Trump's favor in any future court cases. And it is a decision that Trump supports 100%.

I remember when the Kelo decision was handed down. I remember here on Free Republic that the opposition to that decision was 100% against. Today, people here at Free Republic are willing to abandon any semblance of critical thought to give their newly founded support to that decision simply because their savior Donald Trump does so. It is reprehensible.

On Kelo, Donald Trump lines up to the left of even Bernie Sanders. And the biggest crime of all is that people who call themselves 'Conservatives' are fully on board with it.

He lost the case and couldn’t bulldoze the home

Exactly. He tried to bulldoze the home by using eminent domain but he couldn't because he lost the case.

I understand that Carl Icahn purchased the property later. Yes, the very same Carl Icahn who Trump will put in his cabinet. Cozy?

Art of the Deal.......one way or another they will get their deal.

Here’s a question for the Trumpbots: what good is a wall going to do when you have 20 million newly-minted Democrat voters?

Because Trump has supported amnesty for decades, just like he supported every other headline regressive issue. FFS, do your homework!

Without the LOCAL Redevelopment Agency pushing this, it would have never occurred. The issue of course is simple, was the Woman thrown into the Street as suggested by these lying Political Ads? The simple answer is NO.

This isn’t even an issue or anything any POTUS would be involved with. It’s a LOCAL issue, like when they Build Baseball Stadiums and Oil Pipelines in Texas.

I’m more concerned with Clinton and Obama taking vast swathes of Land from the States to make their Environmental Buddies happy. Remember Billy Boy taking part of Utah so Low Sulphur Coal couldn’t be Mined there?

Of course it was Republican President Teddy Roosevelt that started that trend. Heck, Nixon birthed the EPA.

I think the word Obtuse goes way beyond Trump Supporters.

So you are saying the Donald Trump should have told the Development Authority not to try to take Vera’s house? And if he had done that, you would now think that Donald J. Trump was the most wonderful candidate to ever run for office?

I think not! I think you would then find another imagined fault with Donald J. Trump to use as a stepping stone to your high horse. ;-)

Actually your’re the one doing the lying.

The Progressive-Statist Trump did in fact collude with the State to bulldoze a private home to make way for a limo parking lot. The fact that the court struck down this scheme does not mean Trump did not take this wrongful action. People are routinely convicted of conspiracy even when they don’t get away with it.

So we should be able to make people do what they don’t want just because you offered them money they didn’t want.

That is what environmentalists do, minus the money.

How dare you compare Trump rallys with such a disgusting part of history as the murderous Nazi’s and Hitler. That’s beyond disgraceful. I will be skipping past your trash posts in the future.

Do some research on the Kelo case. There is a difference between constitutional emminent domain which is in the public interest (dams, highways, pipelines, etc.) and the Trump case which is condemnation by a local government for development by a private company, by which the company stands to benefit.

The Woman’s Family Auctioned it off and Icahn bought it for peanuts.

I have no idea why he bought it since the Parking Garage Access was already constructed. Maybe he just felt sorry for the Family, who knows?

Building a Conspiracy Theory are we? The Season Finale of The X Files is on Monday night. Maybe Mulder is on the case.
