NEW YORK (AP) -- A rookie police officer who shot an unarmed man dead in a darkened public housing stairwell was convicted Thursday of manslaughter in a case closely watched by advocates for police accountability.
The courtroom audience gasped and Officer Peter Liang, who had broken into tears as he testified about the 2014 shooting of Akai Gurley, buried his head in his hands as the verdict came after 17 hours of jury deliberations.
The manslaughter charge carries up to 15 years in prison. Liang's sentencing is set for April 14.

It is; other cops will be more careful with their weapons (and they should be).
The NYPD should cross that address off their list. If something happens there, the victims should call the Black activists for help.
That doesn't make sense.
It's entirely reasonable for a society to expect their police force to not murder people.
Only Liang didn't "murder" anyone.
"The bullet ricocheted off a wall and hit the 28-year-old Gurley on a lower floor."
It was an "accident"!

Let Sharpton patrol the stairwells in the projects.
There were guys in Iraq and Afghanistan that have been court martialed for a heck of a lot less than what American cops do in residential neighborhoods in Anytown, USA.
It happened to a good friend of mine. I sat in the proceedings.
My buddy simply reached for his pistol when an Afghan got in our perimeter. Never even touched the weapon. Just moved his hand close to it. In Afghanistan. A war zone.
I routinely read stories about American cops killing people, and almost every time it's all excused like it's a routine thing.
We've become WAY too accustomed to cops shooting people in this country.
And apparently we have become WAY too accustomed to people shooting cops.
I done think that’s true, but I do know that American cops do things in Mayberry, USA, with impunity, that we didn’t even do in Afghanistan. It’s not supposed to be like this.
Just because the ROE in Afghanistan are insane, doesn't mean that Liang committed "murder".
Liang discharged his weapon in a negligent manner. The bullet ricocheted down the stairwell and hit someone. If that is murder, then every fatal car accident in America is murder.

That is however manslaughter which is what he was convicted of.
Also when people shoot cops, they are very frequently captured and punished. When cops shot citizens, there is too often a whitewash.
If a non LEO discharged a firearm in a negligent manner and the ricochet killed a bystander they would be charged with manslaughter.
It is not okay to apply the law differently to people with badges.
I was responding to someone who implied that the cop was guilty of murder.

The shooting may have been an accident. But, instead of trying to help him, both cops immediately called their union rep while the victim's girlfriend frantically knocked on doors begging for help. They are monsters.
