The Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance alerted colleges and universities Thursday that they were stopping TOPS payments immediately because of uncertainty related to the state budget.
"Due to the possibility of state budget cuts, all TOPS payments are being suspended until further notice," said an email that went out to all TOPS eligible institutions at 3 p.m. "More details will be provided as information becomes available."
What that means for students and parents is that every student who is currently receiving a TOPS scholarship could end up owing the remainder of the semester's tuition that's not already paid.

I guess “free sh**” isn’t free ultimately. HaHa.
Yup, like Maggie Thatcher said:
“Socialism sounds great, until you run out of other people’s money”.
This move was done two hours before Governor John Bel Edwards (D) is scheduled to address the state on the budget deficit and launch his efforts to raise taxes in an upcoming special session to plug the $800 million deficit this fiscal year.
This is how the governor will try to get the people of Louisiana and Legislature to go along with the plans to raise taxes...by instituting the harshest means to cut the budget possible. Suspending current state scholarship money to students in school right now is one of the harshest ways to cut the budget.
For Edwards and his supporters, it’s either raise taxes or end student aid and slash higher education to the point where universities close.
Keep an eye on Ct and UCONN...
Boo hoo hoo;s coming from that sector recently.
Yep, scare tactics. He is also threatening to close the LSU nursing and dental schools and cut back on the medical school unless taxes are raised. Basically the MSM are playing along and telling people they will lose access to healthcare unless taxes go up.

Things happen when a state goes democrat. No sympathy for Louisiana at this point.
They always have to threaten students, cut police & fire, and other means of scaring the sheep.
It's never cutting pay, laying off worthless employees and cutting benefits.

Jindal caused most of it. He had a Republican legislature. He spent his time running for the presidency.
Louisiana hitched it’s wagon to the oil boom which became a bust. We need more trade schools.
Most of the budget problems are due to the massive lost of revenue due to the drop in oil prices. Edwards made too many promises at a time when our economy is in free fall.

It certainly has an impact now, but I use to listen to C.W.Forgotston on the Moon Griffon show and he was predicting this very scenario years ago, long before the oil situation occurred. John Kennedy has also.
I can’t remember all the stats, but Louisiana’s tax revenue collection on all levels is first among all the Southern states and among the top in the nation.
Medicaid costs are horrendous due to the absolute stupid way it is run.

I heard Edwards’ speech and Kennedy’s GOP response. You can’t trust a Governor who uses adjectives like “catastrophic” and “devastating” to describe the proposed cuts, euphemistically calls for “reducing tax credits” (i.e., raise the income tax), and even appeals to the fears of college-football fans whose oh-so-favorite teams will be no more if things don’t go his way. At least Kennedy stood his ground and pretty much dismissed Edwards’ proposals as unnecessary.
I recall John Kennedy’s GOP response last night zeroed in on the huge mess Medicaid is and how the state has to address fraud in that program. Unfortunately, the only response the Democrats have to any of his arguments is that it’s all political grandstanding because of his U.S. Senate run.
While we’re at it, Edwards made no mention of cuts in “welfare” funds.

I agree. I live in LA and am sick and disgusted that belle edwards is in office. His plan is to raise taxes on EVERYTHING. I am sick about his election. I had to sit through 7 years of an inept, progressive/marxist president and now this. Liberals use that last brain cell to figure out how much they can tax people in order to give away free stuff and get reelected. NOTHING is free but people will vote for these jackels because of it.
