Delaware Governor signs resolution apologizing for slavery; didn’t slavery end over 150 years ago?

Gov. Jack Markell signed a resolution Wednesday apologizing for Delaware's role in slavery and wrongs committed against blacks during the Jim Crow era.

Calling slavery an "egregious sin," Markell said it cannot be separated from the challenges facing modern America in ensuring that everyone has an opportunity to pursue his or her potential.

"A candid acknowledgment and acceptance of our past is the only way to understand our present and to take full responsibility for our future," he said.

Along with signing the resolution, which was passed by state lawmakers last month, Markell presented a proclamation recognizing African American History Month. He also joined Delaware State University Harry Williams in unveiling an exhibit at the state archives commemorating the 125th anniversary of historically black school.

The resolution apologizing for slavery is a symbolic measure aimed at promoting "reconciliation and healing." It states that the General Assembly intends that it not be used in, or be the basis for, any litigation.

Is this part of some strategy to get Joe Biden in the Dem primary at this stage, in case Her Thighness' road show doesn't resonate with Black voters? After all, she can only get so much mileage out of the "Ahh don feel no wayz tahred" routine. OK, Gov, we're light years ahead of the curve. We got it. Slavery, Jim Crow, etc were horrors that shouldn't have occured. I remember years ago when I was just a "young skull full of mush" the first time we took a road trip down to FL. I-95 wasn't fully completed yet and we rode down US 301 through parts of the Carolinas and Ga. In one of the towns (Lumberton or Fayettevile, NC?) was an old stage in the town square that was originally used to auction off slaves. I said how terrible that is and why was it still standing. The most important history teacher in my life, my dear old Dad explained that slavery is part of our history, as great as this country is there were some horrible things that occured. He explained that instead of beating ourselves up over these things, we need to remember our history, good and bad, so that G-D willing we never make the same horrific mistakes again.

Right, because he was around 150 years when that was going on.

Why was Gov. Jack Markell allowed to keep slaves in the first place?

More interesting to me being how many people have lost sleep and/or their appetite over the fact blacks were once slaves?

There isn’t one.

No, liberals, like Markel, still have the plantation operating like a well-oiled machine.

They simply brush a few scraps and crumbs off their graft-filled table and the little buggers scurry around licking them up. Pretty cheap price to get them votes!

At the start of the Civil War, there were 34 states in the United States, 15 of which were slave states. 11 of these slave states seceded from the United States to form the Confederacy. The slave states that stayed in the Union were Maryland, Missouri, Delaware, and Kentucky, and were referred to as the border states.

If whites say we’re sorry, will blacks forgive us? There has to be the other side to the equation for this to do any good. Maybe the Governor can call Jesse Jackson & Al Sharpton to handle the forgiving & then we can all live happily ever after...

Doesn’t anyone care about the many tens of thousands of white Irish slaves that were forced to breed with black slaves in the Caribbean because of English rule?

No, and no one cares that slavery goes on today in many countries.

He could give them 40 acres and a mule and they would have lost them within a month.

What a frickin’ tool.

Yes, slavery was bad. Guess what? The American people fought a war which resulted in it’s end. Now we are blaming the winners?

That’s like saying the Brits should apologize for the holocaust.

Only white Americans must pay reparations, even if they nor anyone in their families ever owned slaves.

It’s OK, Gov. Markell.

The Black Congressional Caucus endorsed Hillary today—further proof they have no intention of ever leaving the Democrat plantation.
