Free Trade is a major tenet of conservatism.

LOL In a word - bunk. The USA was founded on protectionism and rose to preeminence industrially because of it. The primary reason for the Revolutionary War was because of British mercantilism towards the colonies. I would consider our founding father way more conservative than anyone alive today.

If you’re against free trade, no need to worry, you can switch parties and vote for Bernie Sanders to find a candidate who shares your values.

If the U.S. wasn’t engaged in international trade, why did Jefferson go to war against the Barbary pirates? Seems like the modern Trumpians would have told Jefferson to stop any foreign trading, not go to war and just build a wall around the U.S. and stick your fingers in your ears and yell ‘lalalala’ in an effort to try and pretend the rest of the world doesn’t exist.

The cause of the war was pirates from the Barbary States seizing American merchant ships and holding the crews for ransom, demanding the U.S. pay tribute to the Barbary rulers.
