Crime took a big bite out of a small Texas town’s city hall last week when five top officials in Crystal City were arrested on federal corruption charges.

Mayor Ricardo Lopez, city manager William James Jonas, council members Rogelio Mata and Roel Mata, and former council member Gilbert Urrabazo, as well as businessman An indictment handed down by a grand jury accuses the men of taking tens of thousands of dollars in bribes and helping Nguyen, the operator of an illegal gambling operation who goes by "Mr. T," according to The Post. Another council member, Marco Rodriguez, was arrested last month on unrelated human smuggling charges, the newspaper said.

Our little alien friends bring their devotion to “La Mordida” with them when the commit their “act of love.” Yes kiddies there really are cultural traits and in Mexico one of those traits is “La Mordida” which means “the bite.” Oh the joy that egalitarianism brings us.

May municipalities have non-partisan offices at this level. I'm involved with my county Republican Party, and one of my jobs was to figure out which way the city council members leaned. It isn't always easy.

Looks like this town is a hotbed of Chicano activism.

I love this quotation from the WIkipedia page:
In the 1970s, following protests of charges (essentially non-payment of services) on the part of La Raza Unida, Crystal City's natural gas supply was shut off by its only supplier. Crystal City residents were forced to resort to mostly wood burning stoves and individual propane gas tanks for cooking. To this day, there is no natural gas supplier in the Crystal City area, although most residents purchase propane from the city.

Many, many moons ago, I got stuck in a little town near the Tex-Mex border off of I-8 and was forced to spend the night (busted radiator hose). I went out for a walk after dinner and ended up in a hole in the wall bar drinking beer with the town Mayor and City Council. They were part of the same motorcycle gang. I believe the FBI on this one.

How many millions of dollars have been given to this town to subsidize the population for housing, food, and medical?

Terrible.

Years ago I visited some friends in Crystal City who had lived there their whole lives. They talked about how the city had changed when Hispanic democrats (La Raza flavor) took over local government. This was in the mid 90’s and they said the town was corrupt then.

I did get to see the life-size Popeye statue; Crystal city was at one time the spinach capital of the USA.
