North Korea blew up rocket stage to confound analysts: South Korea
The U.S., Japanese and South Korean militaries are scouring the seas for debris and analysts are studying photos, trajectories.
Minutes after North Korea launched its rocket, South Korea's navy detected a rain of fragments falling into the sea and then a sooner-than-expected disappearance of the rocket from their radar, suggesting a possible failure. News outlets working in real time jumped on the idea. But it quickly proved wrong. South Korean officials and foreign analysts say they now believe the first stage of the rocket had a cagey new feature: It was deliberately rigged to blow up after separation Sunday, for the express purpose of confounding foreign analysts.

Don’t be too sure.
OK, now the story makes sense.
But it’s tumbling. Hopefully.
Not just rivets, but raised rivets at that. So weight AND drag.
Steampunk space program.
..EMP isnât even in our weapons inventory...
Is EMP defense part of our inventory? Not for the grid anyway

The comparison shows that the North Koreans lack welding know-how and modern welding technology. It would be a good idea to keep them from acquiring it too! Nevertheless, the NK rocket did launch, travel quite far, and managed to place their primitive "satellite" space junk into orbit.
OH BOY LOL!
This kinda remind me of 7 grade science project LOL!
Hey I saw that rocket on recent episode of TV show Scorpion
TIG dates to the early 1940s.

Yes. Even a simple Lincoln MIG welder from Lowes.
to place their primitive "satellite" space junk into orbit.
An orbital launch vehicle is also an ICBM.
Well that’s disturbing. You’d think if they put all the time and work into putting an “earth observation satellite” into orbit they’d at least add a stabilization system to it. That it’s not using one is worrisome. The only type of payload I can think of which doesn’t need a stabilization system is an orbital bomb. By rotating or tumbling it only requires 1 antenna. The antenna’s surface exposure and attitude obtain maximum from a spinning motion. It’s first satellite is also reported to be tumbling.
If their satellites’ orbital mechanics are known (good assumption) a bomb could be activated using a timer as it passes over N. Korea via a ground-based station. The bomb would then later detonate over its intended target independent of the ground station when the timer runs out.
Good points.
Supposedly they might have a station in Havana they could use to communicate with it as well.
Effective Muslim President????
1030303
Part number?
Serial number?
How many of these do they have, if the part/SNs run into the millions?
Hey, Komlade, go get me a nose cone. No, no wrong one. I need nose cone # 1030303.
Hey!
I’m impressed they got it up that far: But it also means that they CAN get it up far enough to hit the US, China, or anybody else they care to hit.
But a far north latitude launch side means also that polar orbits (which can LAND/IMPACT ANYWHERE) are easier to obtain. “Useful” satellites orbitting at or near the equator are less productive because they criss-cross the equator unless you launch with tremendous weight penalties in added fuel and re-startable rocket motors to make the many corrections needed to flatten the orbit.
But for a weapon? For the “glory” of launching a satellite? Who cares if the Nork People are starving in the dark cold houses? “We have launched a satellite!”
Now.
Are the Nork’s going to sell the rocket and technology to the Iranians so the Iranians can launch their own bomb?
Or are the Iranians going to launch their bomb on a Nork rocket?
The speculation is they blew up the first stage, not the payload.
Sounds like a bit out of Gravity’s Rainbow.

“Why are they reactivating Cheyenne Mountain?
For the space. Peterson AFB is overcrowded.

P.S. CMC was never completely emptied. It contained a number of office users.
