A girl who died of leukemia was given a final send off after her friends signed her casket with loving messages on January 30.
Laura Hillier got to experience a few normal childhood milestones like graduating high school and getting her senior year book signed before she died on January 20.
Laura might have experienced a few more milestones if a Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, hospital had been able to accommodate a bone marrow transplant for the young woman.
Numerous donors were a match with Laura and ready to donate, but Hamilton's Juravinski Hospital didn't have enough beds in high-air-pressure rooms for the procedure.
Hospital staff told her they had about 30 patients with potential donors, but the means to only do about five transplants a month.
Laura was first diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia at age 13.
She had been completely cancer-free for approximately four years after her first battle with AML, and relapsed this past May.
Though Laura was able to achieve remission for a second time, she relapsed again in November 2015.
Dr. Ralph Meyer, Juravinski's vice-president of oncology and palliative care, told Ontario's TheStar.com there are plenty of others facing the same situation as Laura in Canada.
He said donor registries are growing in size, and technological advances allow transplants to safely happen between people who are less of a match for each other are becoming more and more common.

Canadians love their “free” health care. Its the only thing they seem to be proud of.
I couldn’t focus on that ..though it is a lovely gesture.
I was focused on the part that indicated this happened because of socialized medicine.
bump
She would be alive in the USA because someone would have opened up a space for a hospital for her.
Another example of how socialized medicine is the answer. /s
In “The America We Deserve” Trump wrote that he supported universal healthcare and a system that would mirror Canada’s government-run healthcare service.
Another satisfied customer of socialized medicine.
Free health care is worth everything you pay for it. Except it’s not free. In this case it cost a young woman her life.

There are thousands of horror stories about socialized medicine.....only a handful get printed. But ask any healthy Canadian or Brit and they will tell you their NHS is spectacular. Socialized Medicine works great for the majority who are healthy.....they only have to pay exorbitant taxes to be assured of their ‘free’ health care. But their NHS is frequently absent when the patient needs high end care. An often cited truth is the empty Emergency Rooms in Britain. But stoicism is the British way.......in America, people (legally and illegally here)have come to expect good health care, immediately. You can’t have it both ways.
Is it for her or themselves that they cry?
That book was written in 2000. But then some of you insist opinions can never change. Trump has been quite clear it would not work here in current times.
If you continue to insist that people can’t change, then why are people encouraged to become Christians as they could never actual be so due to their past ideas by your standards.
I had a childhood friend that died of leukemia shortly before she would have graduated from HS. Very sad reminder, she was a beautiful girl inside and out..
Is it for her or themselves that they cry?
Both. For most its the 1st time they loose someone they know. 18 is supposed to be an age of invincibility and the future.
Thankfully, Trump is teachable.
We could NEVER have medical mishaps in our ‘’free’’ style of medical care, could we?
NOT.
I remember a news segment where they interviewed a couple praising the Canadian health system. They daughter had died of cancer, but they couldn’t say enough about the system, because they didn’t owe anything.
I do think our system needs an overhaul, but I would rather have my daughter get the best treatment available and owe a fortune.
I never said that people can’t change. Some do, some don’t. I just don’t understand how rich moderate Mitt Romney was completely unacceptable in 2012 because of some of his previous liberal positions, but Trump gets a pass.
Trump isn’t a slick coward.
There is a time for someone who tells it like it is.
I would say Romney did get a pass by many. My biggest frustration is that he crawled in a hole at the end of his campaign and handed it to the Muslim. Romney was PC to the end.
