Only a Barbaric Nation Drafts Its Mothers and Daughters into Combat
nat review ^ | 2/9/16

The most disappointing moment of Saturday night’s debate came when Jeb Bush, Chris Christie, and Marco Rubio each embraced the idea that women should register with the selective service, making it possible for America to draft women into ground combat. The argument for registration is based on the new Pentagon policy opening up all combat jobs to women. Women have served in non-combat roles for decades without any serious push for selective-service registration ensuing. In fact, the Supreme Court, in Rostker v. Goldberg (1981), has used the fact that men and women have different roles as justification for rejecting constitutional objections to the all-male draft. We have repeatedly condemned the Obama administration’s decision to open all combat roles to women, and we have mainly done so by citing a combination of contemporary studies and historical experience to make the case that gender-integrated ground-combat units are less effective than their all-male counterparts. But that is not the only argument. Indeed, there are other fundamental reasons to oppose not just the presence of women in the infantry but their forcible conscription into its ranks. Such a policy inverts natural law and the rules that have grounded our civilization for thousands of years.

In Israel women are subject to conscription. Are they barbaric?

Israel has a population of 8 million and they are surrounded by crazy nuts. The USA has almost 100 million draft age men to select from in an emergency. No need for women at all in the US military.

I think that everyone should be required 1 year Military service and that not all jobs are Combat so we dont have to have women on the front lines. Today’s youth could def use a year of discipline and structure!

It's a question of need. I would argue we don’t currently need it. But if the barbarians were at the gate, my wife would be out with rifle in hand.

You make an excellent point.

I do not hold the mainstream Freeper position on this.

As the father of a son (and myself a veteran), I don't find it any more barbaric to send an unwilling daughter/mother than to send an unwilling son/father.

At this stage of our history and with the technology available, a draft of any sort would be indicative of a national crisis that threatens our very existence. I'm talking an "all hands on deck" emergency.

If the situation is not so bad that we wouldn't compel your brave and useful-with-a-gun wife, then we really can't make a case that all is lost if we don't have pajama-boy defending the nation.

If it's not a true and honest threat to our national existence, and I would argue that the most recent draft experience with Vietnam was not, then you recruit using the laws of supply and demand. Raise this pay; you'll get the volunteers.

Women have served with honor and bravery in Iraq, flying combat aircraft, serving on supply convoys, etc. I agree not in frontline combat roles until absolutely necessary but from Joan of Arc to the WASPs women have the stones to fight. That picture of the rear naked choke is misleading. I am a blue belt in Brazilian Jui Jitsu and we have a few brown belt women who could choke any of you out in 15 seconds, strong, agile, etc.

That isn't the point. The article claimed that nations that draft women are barbaric. It didn't qualify that by exempting countries under a certain population.

I’ve been to Israel, the women on duty they ride buses and hang out on street corners like a secondary police force. They are not combat troops at all.

‘In the rear with the gear’ sounds great until stuff gets real.

The truth is that every Soldier goes through ‘Combat Training’ and that is first and foremost what being a Soldier is about, combat.

Recall Jessica Lynch who was a truck driver who somehow took a wrong turn and was captured and held for days until rescued. She was not a 'Combat Arms' Soldier. She was support.

I do not believe that the public will ever know the truth about what happened there. It is likely wishful thinking that she was just tossed into a room and left alone for the duration of her captivity. She was very fortunate to survive at all I believe.

I do not want this stuff for my granddaughters, or anyone Else's.

Nations that draft women aren’t necessarily barbaric. But drafting women is barbaric and shouldn’t be done unless under extreme circumstance. IMO a nation doing that unnecessarily, not in duress, is barbaric.

I have no problem registering women for the draft. I do have a problem putting women in front line combat roles.

I agree with that "in a vacuum," so to speak, but we're not operating in a vacuum. The ideology that promotes women's eligibility for a draft is the same ideology that is demanding that women have military roles identical to men's.

Yup. Israel and Russia briefly tried woman in combat roles. In both cases it was an epic fail.

So....who will be caring for all the children? The government?

They can postpone having kids until they serve a stint in the military. Government doesn't always have to be the solution.

Look at what the Soviets did during WWII. Entire squadrons of bombers and fighters flown by women. Tanks with women crew members, tanks with women commanders, tank battalions with women commanders, women snipers, women field medics in infantry units. Women on artillery crews. When it comes to survival of a nation, there is no second place.

The USA isn't the Soviet Union

This entire article, its entire premise and all arguments within it are negated, deflated, destroyed and wiped away in the face of one thing only; Abortion.

Justify that horror and the editors at the National Review might have a legitimate argument. Until then, STFU.

Great and powerful Carthage gave her god Molach, her babies to be burned alive. They did this in hope of seeking favor with their idol god. How is that different from abortion? We seek favor with the secular idea of personal freedom from having to care for children. In the end Carthage fell, he people put to the sword what survived enslaved for the mines, arena, and slave markets. We might face that as well.
