That’s good news; there is hope. Once city governments realize nobody is going to magically appear just to provide everything for their gibsmedats, they either take action or simply ride it into the ground (pocketing tons of money along the way); all too often, the state governments have to step in because these welfare reservations bleed state coffers dry as well.
Sorry, Ferguson is in St. Louis County. These are the stats for St. Louis City, which is NOT part of the County. It was beating Detroit in baseball and crime for some time. In fact, every year there is a t-shirt showing the latest comparison stats. Someone else finally noticed.
St. Louis needs a Republican mayor or it needs to fall into the Mississippi River and start from scratch, which is more likely to happen than electing a Republican mayor.
I knew a man who made his living off life insurance sold to mothers of black inner city boys in St. Louis. Every week he went by their houses and collected another $5. This wasn’t life insurance, it was funeral insurance so their kids could have a decent burial. The richest guys in the ghetto are the funeral home directors, drug dealers, and those who sell hair care products.
How bout that? Citizens carrying guns seems to have scared off the criminal element.

Chicago has many more “pacified†neighborhoods.
Some time back I was looking at Chicago crime stats broken down by... district, I think, and one of the worst and one of the best were right beside each other (separated by the river). As a frequent visitor, I still haven't figured out the logic on why some are so much worse than others (there are general patterns like north to south, but also weird outliers)
Chicago's giving it the ol' college try this year, though. January murder rate that matches a spring month last year, Not Good.
As I stated, I have no firsthand knowledge of the situation, but I know what a partial recovery looks like as opposed to urban Hell. Some sections of Jersey City are much safer than they had been in the past, but the same can’t be said of neighboring Newark NJ.
Odessa supposedly super violent?
Odessa Texas had the following homicide totals:

I think that last year was about 7 IIRC.
Flint, Michigan has about 110,000 versus Odessa’s 130,000.
Flint has 50-—70 Killings per year. Odessa had half as many killings in the last five years than Flint has in one year.
St Louis is actually a rather small city , it was separated from St Louis County over taxation issues back in the late 19th century, one of few cities that is not part of a county and has a city Sherriff as well as a PD.
It has dwindled from 800+k in the 1940s to around 315k today- a devastated inner city mess.
Ferguson is not part of St Louis, but a ‘burb.
Avoid it.
I haven’t been to St. Louis in over 30 years. I used to go the McDonnel-Douglas plant there quite regularly as a young engineer working for the F15 SPO. The weather sucked there 95% of the time but the people were nice and it was relatively safe. The only really bad area was East St. Louis across the river in IL.

Odessa had 24 killings from 2011—14.
Flint had 191 killings from 2011—14.
Son and DIL live in Clayton while attending grad school Nice place but don’t stray too far outside the area.....
I’m guessing the numbers they use are per capita or something.. St. Louis and Detroit are only a fraction of the size of Chicagoland...
I live up here and get to St. Louis quite often - it’s a great town - the good parts - but I’d wager half the town is FUBAR.. you can’t say that about Chicago... the bad part of Chicago is actually pretty small compared to the size of the city..
That’s one reason I prefer to use murder rates instead of violent crime rates. It seems to me like it’s the most apples-to-apples crime stat across jurisdictions.
