A list of the most violent cities in each state has been released, with St. Louis, Missouri taking the top spot. Compiled from data released by the FBI charting crime in the first six months of 2015, the 'Gateway City' is followed by Memphis, Tennessee, Detroit, Michigan, Birmingham, Alabama, and Rockford, Illinois, to round out the top five. The violent crimes listed by the FBI include rape, robbery, aggravated assault, and murder. Because the data excludes states with cities that do not have populations over 100,000, Delaware, Maine, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming are not listed and ranked.

One suspects that the Chicago (and probably many other cities as well), are perhaps intentionally and artfully under-reported.

No facts, but it’s a strong hunch that they just might have ways to tidy up some of the embarrassing statistics.

There are plenty of facts out there. Many cities under report crimes to the FBI.

It’s a ratio per 100,000 residents.

Chicago has a lot of gun crime, but a LOT of population.

I think compared to Detroit and St. Louis, Chicago has many more “pacified” neighborhoods.

The number of normal people living in the north side dilute the stats. If the south side were a separate city then it would be number one.

“Flyover country” has become less a description
than a recommendation.

It may not be so much that as the result of depopulation; here in NJ Camden was always a very dangerous city, and the only reason for “improvement” was that whole stretches of the city were literally abandoned. There are simply less violent felons in the city because there are less people to breed them.

I’ve seen some positive comments about Detroit on FR, and I hope they are true; I confess I know little about it nowadays.

Maybe this is a false memory but I could’ve sworn that some months ago the chief of police of Detroit told his citizens to start carrying weapons to protect themselves. Anyone else remember that ?

I had a “National Lampoon’s Vacation” experience in East St. Louis. Richard Pryor’s, “Thank God for prisons,” barely touches the surface of the problem.

I'm shocked that Chicago is not in the top 5.

I'm not shocked at all. I was born and raised in Chicago, in the city, and now I've lived in St. Louis almost as long.

In St. Louis COUNTY, that is, not St. Louis CITY, and therein lies the reason for St. Louis being atop the list. Most of St. Louis's population has moved out of the city and into the county. The population that is left in the city thus has a much higher concentration of crime, especially on the north side. There are still many safe neighborhoods in St. Louis, you just have to know where they are. BTW, Ferguson does not factor into the city statistics, since it is located in the county.

Chicago does not rate as high in crime because of its vastly higher population, thus the percentage of crime per capita is lower.

It’s actually a hot place to visit now, via many travel guides. Tons of new businesses have flooded in. It’s entrepreneur mecca.

Very artsy. Great food. Check out Shinola.

The governor made it affordable to start your own business there.

The ugly parts of our state are now Flint, Battlecreek, Kalamazoo, and Pontiac.
Those are places I stay away from. But nothing in Detroit scares me anymore.

They are probably doing what Jersey City is doing here in NJ: Mass expulsion of the Welfarian population.
