Why would the Pentagon arm, protect and defend al Qaeda after they murdered 3000 Americans on 911 and bombed the Pentagon?

We get hit by a team composed mostly of Saudis, led by a Saudi who is a son of a wealthy Saudi family, well connected with the Saudi regime. We then use this attack as a reason to attack Saudi's enemy Iraq.
