The RNC/GOP could not run their usual playbook to nominate another Designated Loser who is despised by the base of their party like usual.
You are absolutely right. The RNC had this planned shortly after Romney’s lost. Remember we kept hearing how we needed a governor to be the next president? It was all set up for the race to be Clinton vs. Bush, then Bush wold take a dive and bingo- hello evil Clinton. Trump threw a monkey wrench into their plans, and he knows it. He also knows who and what the establishment is all about. He let Chrstie destroy Rubio - that was a thing of beauty.
