Mathis: Will Abbott's Constitutional convention plan succeed?
amarillo.com ^ | 2/6/16 | Mike Mathis

While I agree with the Amarillo Globe-News editorial (Editorial: Abbott makes the right call, Jan. 11, amarillo.com), I would like to point out that Abbott's plan is not calling for a "constitutional convention."

Abbott is calling for an Article V Convention of States (or COS).

A constitutional convention would be a complete rewrite of our Constitution, which is not provided for in the original Constitution. The COS is a method which allows the states to amend the Constitution without the approval of Congress.

See Abbott's news release and detailed paper "Restoring the Rule of Law" at gov.texas.gov. Get the details about a COS from "The Liberty Amendments," by Mark R. Levin.

Texas cannot do this alone. We will have to work in unity with a super majority of the states. I have been following a nationwide COS Project at conventionofstates.com, which is addressing this issue. It is gaining momentum, but is not being reported by the media. I would encourage every Texan — actually every American — who is concerned about the future of our country to take a look at these resources.

How can you and I participate in the process?

Article V ping!

Gov Abbott of TX issued a 92 page paper on restoring the rule of law.

From the exec summary it looks like a good read.

I’ve seen a couple of articles about Abbott calling for the COS, but have not seen his particular issues. Do you have a link? I couldn’t find anything on a quick search.

To deny the sovereign people their God-given right to amend the framework of their government is to refute the maxims of the American Revolution, those pesky Laws of Nature and Nature's God.

Just be sure you know what might happen, no matter what you hope will happen. Else things may take a very nasty and unexpected turn.

There isn't a worldly power that can't be abused. For instance, slander and libel go along with the 1st Amendment.

However, no people meeting to set out the envelope of their government ever sold themselves into slavery.

No other path out of this.

It’s not going to be pretty, but it must happen.

It’s easier to direct you to good information than conduct an insulting back and forth. As far as my supposed ignorance: I worked in government for 35 years. I know politicians.

The point is: If we do nothing, we know we will lose our Republic. Those odds are 100%. On the other hand, The odds that 34 states will take leave of their senses at the same time and that 38 states will then ratify the demolition of our Constitution are close to ZERO. You really need to educated yourself. The COS site addresses your concerns exhaustively. Please go there before you call me a fool or ignorant again.

Give it a rest. You imagine you are alone in having worked in government? (Which is not a great recommendation, BTW.) Somehow where you worked grants you superior knowledge about the Constitution?

From Federalist #1 by Hamilton:

“It has been frequently remarked that it seems to have been reserved to the people of this country, by their conduct and example, to decide the important question, whether societies of men are really capable or not of establishing good government from reflection and choice, or whether they are forever destined to depend for their political constitutions on accident and force. If there be any truth in the remark, the crisis at which we are arrived may with propriety be regarded as the era in which that decision is to be made; and a wrong election of the part we shall act may, in this view, deserve to be considered as the general misfortune of mankind.”

You apparently regard Americans as no longer capable of self-government. We disagree.

Career politicians are killing us. I saw it up close for decades. They won’t impose term limits on themselves. You should read up on Article V. I am not an expert on the Constitution but here is an excellent FAQ addressing your issues:

Look, you are the one that started the attack and calling me ignorant. I think you should give it a rest. And you should educate yourself before bloviating about things you don’t understand.
