The Clintons ruined the name ‘Hillary’ for new parents
Washington Post ^ | February 5, 2016 | by Christopher Ingraham

The chart above plots the popularity of the baby name "Hillary" between 1970 and 2014. What you'll notice right away is that the frequency of the name falls of a cliff starting in 1993, the year Hillary Clinton became first lady.

Francis Smart of the Econometrics by Simulation blog first pointed this out the other day. He notes that the drop is especially striking, given that the popularity of "Hillary" was rising sharply upward until 1992 or so, the year the Clintons first came on to the national stage.

I have a cousin named Hillary. She’s a few years older than my oldest daughter, so she was born ... mid-80s, while the name was becoming more popular.

The name always seemed snooty to me. Of course, the Empress Zero ruined the name Michelle, which used to be a nice name.

So, the achievements of Sir Edmund Percival Hillary, once hailed as the conqueror of Everest, were sharply dimmed? It is terrible that such a bright light to all humanity becomes so tarnished, and by such an unrelated factor.

It’s true! I’m 26 weeks pregnant and when my husband & I were flipping thru a name book we came across “Hillary”. He said “not in a million years...I’d take my chances rolling the Yhatzee cup first”.

My neighbor named his chow dog Chelsea back in the early 90s.
Seemed an appropriate name for the spawn of Hill and Web.

Heh. I just checked this thread to see if someone would mention that. Yes, just like Adolf, it's poison.

“Cruz” is an ordinary, though not especially common, given name for Mexicans of either sex.

Good question. Ditto for Chelsea and Michelle .. can anyone find the stats?

And did Junior manage to ruin "George"? (I doubt, but worth checking).

My daughter, born in 1990, is named Hilary.

We chose the name before anyone knew who Bill and Hillary Clinton were.

And there have been countless times when I've been asked my daughter's name that I curtly reply, "Hilary, with one L.!"

Our firstborn came along in Feb ‘92. We had a boy name picked out but the girl names were narrowed down to 2 or 3. Hillary was one of them. Thankfully, we dodged the bullet and had a boy. We still have that baby name book, and it’s funny to look back at some of the names we were considering.

We had two more boys and three girls, and none of the names that were even under consideration at the time (before we narrowed the list) ever made the cut. After the first to we really didn’t do any prep work and we always seemed to be in the situation where they weren’t going to let us check out until we had a name to put on the form.
