It was the fear of the race riots. When I was in the 9th grade I was sitting in French class and everyone was talking about what would we do if the Detroit rioters came to Flint.

We didn't have riots but we did have all the other stuff that caused fear. We had white flight to the surrounding suburbs, which left Flint like a hollow shell. Not unlike what has happened to many other cities.

I remember my aged next door neighbor being certain that the riots would come to town. She didn’t leave the house for days!
