Cruz opens up about half-sister’s drug addiction, death
The Hill ^ | 2/4/16 | Mark Hensch

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) recounted his older half-sister's struggles with drug addiction and eventual death during an emotional speech Thursday.

"These tragedies are happening in human lives all over this country -- it's the human journey," the GOP presidential candidate said at Emanuel Baptist Church in Hooksett, N.H., according to CNN. "It's fraught with peril and sometimes people make decisions bound and determined to destroy themselves.

"As a family you wonder: What could I have done more? Was there a way to change the path she was on? Those are the questions you never fully answer."

Cruz was describing Miriam Cruz, one of two children from his father Rafael Cruz's first marriage. He said she resented her parents' divorce and eventually turned towards prescription painkillers.

"Every one of us who has dealt with these demons -- or who has dealt with loved ones grappling with these demons -- everyone knows that these are personal journeys," Cruz said.

"Faith and a relationship with God can be a powerful, powerful element in turning that around," he added, citing his father's own method for escaping alcohol addiction.

Cruz added that he tried intervening in his half-sister's issues but could not convince her she needed rehabilitation.

Yes and yes; one does not fully answer those questions by choice.

Should have stayed out of the ME for that matter...

Should have got some of our own damned oil elsewhere.

Society, by giving its official unction to drugs by way of legalizing marijuana to gather in tax revenue, is betraying its youth.

So the US was in betrayal of its youth from 1787 until the 1930's when FDR saved us with defacto mj prohibition?

[He was speaking in a church and related how faith is an important part of his life...in other words expedient to his audience]

The Christian walk includes sharing personal journeys to help others know that they are not alone in their suffering and that Christ will give them strength to see them through.

In the last couple of days, I’ve seen posts on a neighborhood message website about needles found in nearby subdivisions. Whether heroin was involved wasn’t confirmed, but the Sheriff’s Department is investigating. The posters were shocked, Shocked! about this happening in their better-than-you neighborhood.

I agree that physical interdiction at the border would have an impact in reducing supply. However, iirc, there’s a lot of crossover between heroin use and prescription painkiller abuse. It could be that reducing the heroin supply would only result in users’ switching back to Oxycontin.

Oxycontin’s been reformulated to eliminate much of the buzz.

And betrayed its youth for all but a decade and a half of American history by legalizing the toxic addictive drug alcohol.

He has no chance with Independents. I am a conservative but an independent who votes Republican 99% of the time, except locally on occasion. He has zero chance to unite the party.

Sorry Andy. Citizenship amnesty is a serious thing. Rubio could have been a star. Too bad.

Saw a poll the other night wherein NH Citizens ranked drug use/overdose/culture as the #1 problem facing their state, more than the economy, healthcare, terrorism, etc. And it is literally, dead serious...as so in many other parts of the country.

Seriously. See my post #93. Drug addiction/use ranks as the #1 concern for NH Citizens in a recent poll/ranking on the importance of top issues they face.

Trump makes no issue about it. Cruz is trying though.

What? Trump talked about it on the campaign trail and Cruz talked about it on the campaign trail.

Counter to the epidemic among adults, heroin use actually declined among the 12-17 age group. See chart from the CDC, July 2015 => http://www.cdc.gov/vitalsigns/heroin/infographic.html
